Rebel Obsession (The Firehouse Book 4) Page 7

by Anna Joung

She lifts her head to gaze at me with a hint of sadness. “We were both foolish but I still think me leaving was for the best.”

I growl my frustration. “How can you say that? I love you, Summer.” My hold on her face tightened just a little. “Come home with me, let me show you how much. I miss you like crazy. My place feels empty without you. I feel empty without you.”

  “Rebel―”

My lips graze hers. Once. Twice. Until her breathing quickens. She wants me as much as I want her. I can feel in the way her body slightly quivers. The way she clutches the lapels of my jacket. She lets out a breathy giggle. “You’re wearing a suit and a tie. Who are you?”

“I’m trying to be less of a rebel. Do you like it?”

“Oh, Rebel. That’s sweet. I do like your new look,” her eyes bore into mine, “but who said I wanted you to change? I love you the way you are. Leather jackets, jeans, tattoos, potty mouth and all.”

I can’t contain my smirk. “Really? Then you should come home with me and help me out of this monkey suit.” I wiggle my eyebrows and she giggles. I love the sound of her girly giggles.

“I miss this, you joking around. I miss you so much.”

“Then come home. My place is your home. We can be together, Summer.” I kiss her again, languidly, swiping my tongue between her lips, hoping to change her mind. She melts into me, moans, and I’m convinced I’ve got her back.

Then she sends my world crashing to the ground again. “I want to be with you but the time isn’t right.”

I blink, my mounting desire from our kiss dissipating. “What?”

“It’s not the right time, Rebel. I have to go.”

She takes off, walking rapidly to a tinted SUV that pulls up. I’m so paralyzed by the shock I don’t move in time to stop her. She hops into the vehicle before I get to her. Slamming my palms against the window, I shout, “Summer, what the fuck are you doing? You can’t just disappear again.”

The window comes down, revealing her remorseful expression. She doesn’t have to be sorry about a thing if she just comes home with me. Everything will be made right. “Get out of the car and come home with me. You’re killing me, you know that right? I can’t live without you.”

A single tear rolls down her cheek. I’m pissed as fuck yet, I want to wipe it away and comfort her. She doesn’t say anything and the car starts moving.

“Summer, please, don’t do this again.”

I watch helpless, heartbroken, in disbelief as Summer rolls right out of my life. Again.
