Winter at Pretty Beach Page 22

‘This is for you.’ He leant into the centre console of the car and pulled out a small black box.

‘Ben, what the heck! A gift? What is it?’ She said, a smile on her lips as she stared at the little box in his hand, thinking he’d bought a gift to celebrate her being pregnant.

‘Just open it,’ he said, passing her the box.

She pushed her bag back down onto the floor, and pulled off the white ribbon bow and slowly opened the box.

Inside was a door key, what looked like a front door key and attached to it an old-fashioned style luggage label tied on with string. Sallie picked it up, confused. The label dangled down and she turned it over. In small, neat letters it read,

  Strawberry Hill House

She looked over at Ben, bemused. Ben looked back at her, not quite sure what to say.

‘Sals, we’re the new owners of Strawberry Hill House.’

  Author’s Notes

Thanks for reading all about the delightful world of Pretty Beach - I love it, all the lovely little pastel shops, all the characters, dreaming about the Orangery and of course the Boat House.

I wrote Winter at Pretty Beach tucked up in the Summer House at the end of the garden as summertime sounds were all around. Don’t you just love those days? Lawnmowers in the distance, a wood pigeon cooing, a plane leaving trails somewhere overhead. Winter at Pretty Beach came about after the whole country had been blanketed in a layer of white back in the February and my mind had wandered to how the little town by the sea would be in the Winter. I sat there with long, tall glasses of homemade lemonade and big jugs of David Austin roses imagining walking along in the snow (there may have been a dashing pilot by my side, haha).

As I was writing Winter, Juliette Pretty Beach’s midwife kept popping up from the page and saying hello, and so in the next book in the saga, we leave Sallie and Ben for a bit (not for long though) and we learn all about the ups and downs of Juliette and her life in Pretty Beach - and if you quite fancied a dashing pilot in your life, Juliette’s love interest might just give him a run for his money.

The story of the Orangery and the competition came about because I’d seen a livestream on the internet of the beach in a very nice little sunny town and when I was sitting there gazing at the unbelievably blue sea a bride and groom walked past with their photographer. My mind wandered on and it ended up with the competition for the Orangery wedding - in the book Sallie comes across a live birth on the internet and it gives her the idea.

At the moment, typing these author notes I’m sitting at the cafe at the end of my road, a big pot of tea and a rather large slice of cream cake by my side. The cafe’s sweet pooch has conked out in the heat and is snoozing by my feet.

I’d love you to come and say hello, I’m on Instagram or Facebook and would absolutely love to see you there.

Oh, and please, if you have a minute, I would really appreciate it if you wouldn’t mind leaving a review (just click here).
