“You have to admit that ousting Layla and becoming our leader was what was best for everyone,” Jag said.
“Things turned out all right in the end,” Nathan agreed. Frowning, he tilted his head.
“What is it?” Jag asked.
Nate heard the faint noise once more. It sounded like the crunching of snow, just outside the cabin. “Someone’s here.”
“Do you think it’s the rogue shifter?”
Nate shook his head. “Dunno.”
“Blade stood up from the couch. “There’s only one way to find out.”
The three men raced out the front door and down the porch. “Over here!” Blade yelled. Nate ran over to where he was standing and pointing in the snow.
“Tracks.”
“They’re human.”
“Fuck.”
“Follow them,” Nate said. “I’ll check on Shae.” He raced back inside and up the stairs.
“Shae,” he said, trying to keep his voice calm. “It’s time to get up, little one. I know you’re tired, but—”
Nathan burst into her room and found it empty. The bindings had been broken, and the window opened. He strode around the bed, looking both under it and the rest of the furniture, but she was nowhere in sight.
“Damn.” He turned slowly around the room, taking everything in. Stopping in front of the window, he closed his eyes and reached out with his senses, trying to pick up her trail.
“Come on, baby,” he whispered. “Talk to me.”
A faint breeze hit his right side, and a tugging sensation pulled him toward the right side of the property.
“Nathan!”
Nathan leaned out the window and saw Jag and Blade underneath him. They had been joined by Garrick and Lance.
“The tracks stop here,” Jag said. “Someone climbed the side of the building.”
“She’s gone,” Nathan confirmed as adrenaline surged through his veins. Grabbing the edge of the sill, he eased out onto the side of the cabin and made his way down to them, moving with otherworld-like grace.
They had already shifted by the time he set his feet on the ground. Lifting his hands up, Nathan called upon the energy of the universe to funnel into his body and initiate the change.
I have picked up Shae’s scent, but it is odd.
Odd? Nathan asked.
Different, as if someone was trying to mask it.
Nathan frowned. Who would do such a thing?
Someone who knows we can follow them by smell. Jag sniffed the snow, trying to pick up the trail. After a long moment, he shook his head. Shae’s scent stops here.
It’s was the same with that family at the cabin. One minute we could smell the murderer, the next we couldn’t. Blade sniffed around for a moment, then looked over his shoulder at Nathan. I think I’ve picked up the trail. Whoever took Shae is heading toward the lodge.
The lodge?
Blade nodded. It’s fading, so we better hurry.
Leave it to Blade, his best tracker, to pick up the scent. Jag, go find Knox, Rocco and the others. Tell them that there’s a crisis and to meet us along the fence. Blade, lead the way. If she leaves the reservation land, it will be almost impossible to get her back.
Blade took off into the woods, and Nathan followed. They ran in silence, each knowing that time was of the essence. If Shae and her captor made it over the fence and off the reservation land, it would be almost impossible to get her back. They couldn’t follow her without scaring the humans and violating an agreement they had with the local government to stay on the reservation land. She’d be back in the realm of the humans, unprotected and at risk.
Shae was still fragile. In the realm of the humans, the impulse to have sex would be difficult to control. She’d fuck any man who made eye contact, then claw his eyes out when he didn’t satisfy her needs.
Sex and violence. That was all a female youngling like Shae understood. That was all she would ever understand unless someone taught her control and balance. Without a bear to guide her, Shae’s power would eat away at her mind and slowly drive her insane.
Just like Layla. Nathan might have been tricked into marking Layla, but she was still his mate. In his selfishness, he had failed her, and when she had succumbed to the insanity he had no one to blame but himself. Watching her die had been the hardest thing Nathan ever had to do. It was something he never wanted to repeat.
Now the universe was giving him a second chance, and he was determined not to fail a second time.
I’m coming, little one. I’m coming.

What follows is a quick excerpt from the third book in the Bride for the Bear Shifter series, Embraced by the Bear:
After a quick glance up and down the hall to confirm it was empty, Shae started toward the stairs. About half way to her destination, the hairs on the back of her neck stood on end. She stopped next to an alcove and squinted into the shadows.
“Who’s there?”
A large man materialized in front of her. “Just me, sugar. I’ve come to take you home.”
Strange, she felt the same weird connection with this man that she did with Edward hours before. Everything was so confusing, and she wished that she had time to sort everything out. “Who are you?”
“Name’s Knox Goodman.” A noise rose up from the other end of the hall. Before Shae could react, Knox grabbed her arm and pulled her into the shadows. He turned her until her back hit the wall, and then pressed his large frame against her.
“Sorry, sugar.” He covered her mouth like he covered her body. Immediately Shae’s desire went into overdrive. She parted her lips, inviting him to enter. He did, and as his tongue brushed against hers, she groaned and wrapped her arms around his neck.
This was what she wanted, what she craved. Never before had Shae needed sex like she did in this moment. Tilting her head, she met his tongue, caressed it as she threaded her fingers into his thick, blonde hair. His layers felt like silk, and his body felt like sin. Urgency rose up from her core, compelling her to raise her leg. He groaned as she wrapped it around his hip and ground her pussy against his growing erection.
From somewhere in the distance footsteps came closer, hesitated, then faded.
Knox pulled away from the kiss, but didn’t separate their bodies. Instead he rested his forehead against hers and took in large gulps of air.
“Fuck woman, we need to stop. Nathan’s going to kill me.”
“I don’t care. I need to feel you of me, Knox. I need it now. . .”
