Promise Me This Page 10

How many left with plans to rush to the altar? Two Couples. Well done, Ms. Woodhouse. The odds are remarkable considering the gene pool is shallow at these events. Money stays with money. It’s familiar and safe. Our lucky couples? Frederick Wentworth and Margaret Elliott, who it seems, this writer discovered, were engaged previously before someone got cold feet. I chew my thumbnail in anticipation as I wait to see if these nuptials will actually happen. The other couple? Charles Bingley and this writer’s oldest daughter, Jane Bennet. Am I pleased with this union? You bet your sweet yoga pants I am. Jane is a lovely, kind, and sweet woman. Charles Bingley appears softhearted as well. A wonderful combination, but not the essential point here. My lovely Jane will forever be taken care of. Charles Bingley earns a handsome wage as a lawyer and falls asleep every night cushioned by his multiple-zeros trust fund. Charles Bingley is not a lazy man, a wastrel spending more than he makes. There will be no concern about how bills will get paid or how to cover unexpected expenses. What more could a mother want?

You may ask, Dear Reader, if I’m telling you that marrying for money is the way to go. My answer? Well, of course I am. IF. (Note all capitals.) IF the person with all the money has a gentle nature. Prime example, William Darcy is single. He’s loaded to the gills with more money than he or his sister will ever spend in multiple lifetimes, but he is a cold man, a distant one. Money is a wonderful stress reducer, but when shared with a cold-hearted person, there will never be enough Benjamins to cover and warm oneself. This stands for Caroline Bingley as well. Not that she’d share a dime of her money, much less a dollar. And one would be constantly subjected to that serrated tongue of hers. No, thank you.

What should you take away from this, dearest, loveliest readers? Love is a struggle for us all. Money makes it easier. So doll up your face, fluff up your hair, and get out there. Set a goal. Know what you won’t settle for and stick to it. This includes knowing a potential partner’s yearly income and not accepting less than what you want. You deserve it!

Oh, and William Darcy may be the richest and most eligible bachelor around town, but George Knightley is the real catch.

  You heard it here first.

Has Elizabeth’s mother destroy the company and Elizabeth’s belief in love? Find out when William asks Elizabeth to help him find a wife in the the final installment of Marry Me, Matchmaker (Book 5)
