I told her I was going to New York, not Hollywood. She didn’t want to let me go, but I had to. It was time to move on.

Luckily, I got the job working for Carson within two days of moving. The day I arrived I joined an agency and they told me that I was just what CR Enterprises was looking for. I fit the profile, which I found a little weird, but when Jackson interviewed me it all felt a bit too good to be true. I had only worked at the realtor’s since high school, almost two years ago. Also, I’d spent my entire life in a small town and had never even been to such a big city until then. It was the first time I had travelled more than ten miles from home, so the idea of being a perfect fit was surreal.

The agent said they were looking for someone with fresh ideas and who was new to the town, not someone who would take a job and then leave a few weeks later like most New Yorkers. They wanted someone who would settle down, find their feet, and stay.

I was not quite sure what that meant, but I was up for the challenge. I had little money in my purse and the high rents I had seen in the press when I arrived meant that I needed a job soon, I never expected it to be so soon. But, I was grateful.

I started work and was introduced to him—the man who answered all my prayers—on the third day of work. I had one word of warning from the other staff—be prepared to come alive when he walks into the room. That day he walked into the office at 8.29 a.m. and every part of me came alive. He caught my breath and he is still catching it now...free in Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk. Click for your free copy now.

***That Night With My Best Friend´s Brother***

  Description

Married life is not turning out the way I planned, I thought being with the man that rocked my world was all I needed in life.

It is a pity that he doesn't feel that way about me.

  He disregards me.

  I'm fed up of it.

  He pretends I don't exist.

  I'm tired of it.

My best friend said she was hitting the town. I never knew her brother was coming along. As the night came to an end, I started to worry about the consequences back home for my night on the town.

  Chapter One

“Jake, I’m tired of the same old routine. When was the last time we went out?” I purred at Jake, hoping for once my husband would take me out and show me a good time.

He kissed me on the forehead and said, “Ask Rachel what she’s doing tonight. I need to be out early—I have to go and visit the client in Houston.”

I knew he was going in the morning. I questioned him when he said he had a business trip on a Saturday. He explained, but I don’t think he understood the point I was making. Weekends were for couples or single people to hang out, not for business trips surely. Could he not dedicate one night for us to spend together? Just for once!

I was sure Rachel would be out with her beau, Dwayne. Besides, I hadn’t seen her in the last few weeks, as I´d been busy trying to get my husband to notice me. I thought that would be hard work after ten years of marriage. Not in our third year. It never used to be like this. For crying out loud, I was only twenty-five, but right now with Jake, I felt around fifty, being a dutiful housewife with no kids and working full-time.

“Charlotte, babes.” He paused as he stood by our bedroom door. He avoided me like the plague as I made my way towards him in our room. That was his usual sign that I was disturbing him and that he was going to dismiss me like a piece of fluff on his shirt. “I’m doing this for us.”

How many times had I heard that line? Too many times, I thought as he walked out the door, into the study to have some peace and quiet. I’d taken the day off so that we could have a romantic night. He left me like a jilted bride in our bedroom. He went away from me. Away from my new hairdo that he hadn´t even noticed. Away from the dress I spent half the day trying to decide if he would like. Away from me spending the rest of the day in the beauty salon getting my nails done, a bikini wax, and a pedicure. He never even noticed. I didn’t think he even cared.

Didn’t he realize that in order to have kids we needed to at least have sex? Maybe at least once a year!

We were midway through June and I couldn’t remember the last time he touched me. A simple kiss on the forehead was all I had to look forward to these days. Well, not tonight. I pulled myself together, picked up my phone, and called Rachel, my best friend.

She’d told me that marriage would change things between Jake and I. Never in a million years did I think the man who couldn’t get enough of me in and out of the bedroom, three years down the aisle wouldn’t even notice me.

I’d intended to spend my Friday night on the town. That was my plan, to be followed by a romantic evening with my husband. That was obviously far from reality. Jake had only one thing on his mind: a case. If it wasn’t a current case, it would be a future case. Or one that one of the partners was working on. It was always something, ever since he was made partner.

“I’m doing this for us. So when we have kids they will be able to have anything they want.” These were the words that he would repeat whenever I questioned why there was no time for us. I didn’t even think I could conceive anymore. My eggs were probably dead. They had hardly seen any action in the last few months. I’d even stopped taking the pill, as it felt like a joke. The first year of a marriage was hot, the second year was lukewarm, and the third year was just stone cold.

“Rachel, hey, what you up to?” I sighed as soon as she picked up. I had lost all my friends the first year of marriage. It was Jake and I against the world. As soon as I tried to reconnect with them last year, well, let’s just say they didn’t take too kindly to me trying to connect, because of my issues with Jake. Rachel told me that all I did was moan about Jake. If they were in my shoes, they would do the same. That was the problem, none of them could relate. They were all happily married or happy being single, apart from Rachel.

  “Charlotte, is that you?”

I was just about to open my mouth to confirm it, but she kept on talking. “Great. I’ve got a problem. Thought you were having a romantic night with Jake, so I never bothered you.” I had sent her an email from work last night saying that Jake was on a trip and Friday night I would make it a night to remember. I was so wrong. Rachel talked like the world was about to end and she had to get everything out of her mouth there and then. “So, my brother’s in town. Dwayne’s here and we’re all ready to go out. It would have been three is a crowd sort of thing. If you’re game, we’ll be there in fifteen.”

With her last words she hung up. Rachel didn’t even wait for me to respond. Typical, I thought as I got up and looked in the mirror and saw the mascara running down my cheek. I needed to clean up and get out of to paint the town and not with my husband. Yet that was nothing new. Nothing new at all....this book is in Kindleunlimited.
