“Yes, just one sec.” I applied a thin coat of pink lip gloss and smiled to myself in the mirror. I‘d bought a new dress for this occasion, and I’d chosen a teal blue fashion with a shorter hemline, a little more modest than the black dress I’d worn to Cooper’s birthday party. Matching, strappy heels covered my feet, and my hair was done in a pretty up-do with curled tendrils hanging down around my face. “Okay, Kare, let’s go.”

I stepped around the corner just in time for a flower deliveryman to nearly bump into me. I gave him my apologies, but he stopped me by saying, “Are you Ms. Davenport?”

Karolyn and I stop. “Yes. Why?”

The man looked at the card. “These are for you.”

He shoved the dozen pale pink roses towards me, and I took them, wondering who would send me such pretty flowers. When I asked, he shrugged and took off the way he’d come.

Karolyn arched her perfectly plucked eyebrows at me, crossing her arms over her pert cleavage. “Do we have an admirer?”

I shrugged, feeling helplessly girly as I set the flowers on the floor to read the card. No one had ever sent me flowers. To get an unexpected treat like this was, needless to say, shocking.

I pulled out the card as Karolyn bent forward to smell the lovely fragrance of one of the blooms. My heart skipped a beat even before I read what the card said.

Each rose is for a week I’ve gone without you. I hope to see you tonight and perhaps, pick up where we left off. I never thought it possible, but I miss you, Cupcake. Meet me on the dance floor for the first song, the first dance.

  —J

My heart thumped wildly when I spotted one single word: Cupcake. I scanned the note again, reading it word for word before I truly understood what he was saying.

Jake would be here. Jake wanted to see me again.

Perhaps, in the back of my mind, I’d dressed up for him. There was no guarantee that Jake would be at the dinner tonight but I had wanted to look my best. Just in case. And now he was here. And he wanted me. And oh, how I wanted him.

“Earth to Ashlyn.” Karolyn waved her hands in front of my face before snapping her fingers to get my attention. I blinked once, finally focusing on her.

“Who’s the note from that it made you go all bleary-eyed?” she asked.

I smiled, lifting the roses to my nose and began walking towards my office. “No one you know.”

Not totally true, since every living, breathing woman knew a hottie when one was around. Jake dominated the air space around him, and every woman in the room felt his presence. And I had missed that presence more than I had possibly known.

I slipped inside my office, situating the vase on my desk. My panties were already soaked and, glancing back to see Karolyn wasn’t around, I slipped them from my body, tucking them into my desk drawer. The hem of my dress fell to mid-thigh and was a rayon-like fabric. No doubt every curve of my body was accentuated.

I meet Karolyn in the hall and, together, we took her car to the convention center. The first dance started fifteen minutes after seven, and I had two minutes to spare upon entering the ballroom.

I scanned the crowd but saw no Jake. Where could he possibly be?

“Ash, you okay?” Karolyn asked, giving me a questioning glance.

“Super. I’m going to get something to drink.” I headed to the bar in the far corner and requested a glass of champagne.

The bartender handed me the glass and I moved to the side to get a better view of the crowd. Where could he be?

“Party sucks, doesn’t it?” A warm familiar voice whispered in my ear, making my nipples hard.

I smiled to myself as I sipped my champagne. “Actually, I’m having a good time. I just received a dozen roses, so I’m in a pretty damn good mood.”

I turned towards him and my jaw nearly dropped to the floor. Instead of the casual denim and worn tee, the man standing before me wore a black Armani suit, black shirt and silver tie. His hair was coated with gel and his eyes were the deepest blue-gray I’d ever seen. Amazing how someone could change.

“See something you like?” He smiled, perfect white teeth shining against the dark tan of his skin.

It took all of five seconds to realize he expected a reply. “Since when do you go along with the rules? Wasn’t it just a few months ago you told me you don’t give a fuck?”

“Yes. I did say that.” His grin grew wider. “If it’s any consolation though, I dressed up for you.”

It was my turn to grin. “I don’t like my men soft.”

His hand snaked around my waist and pulled me to him, his erection perfectly aligned with my pelvis. He pressed hard against me, making sure I got his point. I groaned and nearly dropped my half empty glass of champagne.

“Does anything about me feel soft?” His mouth claimed mine, and it was a homecoming, a long time waiting. I dropped the champagne glass, and it shattered to a million pieces at our feet. I wanted him now and, the longer we kissed, the less of an argument I’d have to him taking me up against this wall. People be damned.

“Slow down, baby. We’ve got all night.” He pulled away from me, just as the band started its first song. The beginning of Your Man floated through the speakers and I met Jake’s eyes, knowing. Our first song together. The one he’d said was gay.

“I thought you hated this song,” I said as he led me to the dance floor.

“I did, but every time I heard the damn thing, I remembered how you felt in my arms.” As if to prove his point, he wrapped his arms around me as he started swaying his hips in a gentle rhythm. “I’ve missed you, Cupcake.”

We danced in slow circles, just as we had on our first night. I smelled his cologne and remembered being surrounded by the scent—his scent—while we’d fucked in his bed. I remembered how he’d tasted on my tongue, how he’d loved it when I’d teased and toyed with him. I wanted his hands on me, his mouth sucking me while his cock begged me for release. I wanted him so badly my body shook with need.

  “Jake, I’ve missed you, too.”

We danced until the song ended, then Jake kissed me in front of everyone on the dance floor. I felt as if fireworks had exploded around us, the two of us finally coming back together after being apart for what seemed like forever. I never wanted the kiss to end.

“Well, well, well. My little brother is already hitting on my personal assistant.” Cooper Nelson’s voice sounded through the fog, drawing us out of a lust-induced stupor.

“Can it, Coop.” Jake never took his eyes off me while he spoke to his brother. “She’s mine.”

My hormones did a dance of joy. I glanced up to see Cooper’s smile. “Then go get a room,” he said. “You two are hogging the dance floor.”

Jake’s lips quirked upward at his brother’s suggestion. I smiled, figuring it was my turn to say, “Let’s get out of here.”

  * * * * *

We didn’t even make it through the door of my apartment before we started removing the necessary clothing to get our bodies in line with each other. Jake pulled my dress up to my stomach, groaning when he saw smooth, bare skin underneath. He led me to the couch, falling on top of me when I finally freed his cock from his pants.

As if the stars had aligned, he slid deep inside me. I arched off the couch, sinking my nails into his back as he pumped his cock in and out, over and over. It took everything within me not to come on the spot as his cock’s head bumped my g-spot and I wailed. And he did it over and over, driving me out of my mind with pleasure so intense, my teeth rattled.

Afterward, I undressed him, and he curled up with me on the couch, pulling an afghan blanket over us. The leather cushions were smooth against my heated skin, and my sweaty body stuck to them. Jake lay half asleep in my arms and I couldn’t help thinking, could life really be any better?

“You got a tattoo,” Jake mumbled, filling the silence.

I grinned. I’d been wondering if he’d noticed. The small mark was no bigger than an inch all the way around, colored in pink and white o
n my skin. Jake’s thumb stroked my hip, right over the brand before he pushed up to meet my eyes.

  “It’s of a cupcake,” I told him.

  He grinned. “I see that.”

“I got it on a whim.” I chuckled, recalling the event. “Karolyn thought I was crazy for requesting a cupcake design but she didn’t rag me too much.” I skimmed my hands along the length of his arms. “Do you know her?”

  He licked his lips. “Unfortunately.”

  “Why ‘unfortunately’?”

He shifted to his side. “She’s a nuisance.”

I remembered the conversation Karolyn and I had had about Jake and his cabin and a twinge of jealousy sprang through me. “Oh.”

I must have had a look of dismay on my face because Jake reached out and brushed my cheek with the tips of his fingers. “Don’t even let your pretty little mind go that direction, Cupcake. I’ve never fucked Karolyn. She’s just been to my house to deliver stuff per my brother’s request.”

Relief filled me instantly. Jake leaned down to kiss me, long and languorously, our tongues tangoing in a passion of their own. When I finally came up for air, I couldn’t resist asking, “Why do you call me that?”

  “What?”

  “Cupcake.”

He moved, working his way down my body as he kissed and nibbled every inch of my exposed flesh. “Because you’re a treat—so sweet and good to eat.”

He punctuated his statement with a kiss, lowering his mouth until it came in contact with my mound. He glanced up and for a brief moment I saw something indescribable in his eyes. It nearly took my breath away.

“I’m falling in love with you.”

Tears filled my eyes as I reached for him. I didn’t know what I was feeling but I wanted him close. I needed him. He kissed me and then pulled back to assess my expression. “I’m fine, really,” I said.

“You don’t look it.” He reached between us, sliding a finger between my thighs. “Did I say something wrong?”

I shook my head. “No. It’s just…I love you too.”

“Good, because after another quick fuck on the couch, we’re moving to the bedroom.” He kissed my neck, licking the pulse point there. “I want you spread out, staring up at me, knowing each time my cock enters your sweet pussy, I’m only thinking about you. I want you to know that each kiss is more addictive than a drug. I want you lying beneath me, taking every inch of me, understanding I’m yours for as long as you’ll have me. And I’m not planning on going anywhere for a long time.”

He slid inside me, arching his body over mine. And then he proceeded to show me exactly what he meant.

  Excerpt of Hot Summer Nights

When she was alone, Brooklyn surveyed the room. Instead of the musty wood-paneled walls she knew from camp, this cottage was just as luxurious as the resort’s lobby. Stylish with a red and black theme, the room was hardly beach-like. She’d expected turquoise or white—something of that nature—but the cottage they’d given her was contemporary with the finest fabrics and a sexy appeal.

  “Wow.”

She walked around her luggage, towards the hallway. Her heels clicked against the tile floors as she entered the bathroom, complete with a whirlpool tub and large, separate shower. Her jaw dropped when she noticed the amenities were supplied with her favorite color bath towels: hot pink. Upon making the reservations, the resort sent out a survey for their potential guests so they could accommodate their most specific of needs—right down to the color of their bath towels. This place truly was heaven on earth.

Shaking off the disbelief, she went to the next room and gasped. A massive bed dominated the room, the headboard seeming as wide as the wall itself. Black silk sheets made up the bed with soft, fluffy pillows beckoning to her. Overhead, a skylight presented a beautiful view of the clouds. The room was exquisite and went way beyond Brooklyn’s expectations, but it was the picture hanging over the bed that caught and held her attention.

In black and white, a very sexy man lay on top of a car staring up at the sky while an innocent woman looked right in the camera, teasing onlookers as she lay on top of his nearly naked body, her head resting on his toned abs. She curled into him, hooking her fingers in his boxers. The picture was highly erotic and Brooklyn wanted to be that woman.

“I may never leave this place.” She finally forcing herself to look away, turned the corner and walked back to the living area.

“Uh, hello?” a voice called out.

Brooklyn stopped when she entered the living area again. “Yes? Can I help you?”

The man standing in her doorway smiled. Ruggedly handsome, dressed in a tight white tee with camouflage pants, the stranger nearly took her breath away. His hair stood in dark brown spikes with blonde tips, though Brooklyn couldn’t tell if they were natural highlights or from a salon.

“Uh, I’m Channing Hastings.” He took a step towards her and extended his hand. Brooklyn smiled and shook his hand. “I’m a photographer for the resort, and we used this cottage for the last photo shoot. I think I may have forgot one of my cameras back in the bedroom. Would you mind if I retrieved it?”

“Not at all.” She stepped back. “I didn’t realize the Island offered photography. What exactly do you take pictures of?”

  He smiled. “Sex.”

  Brooklyn
squeezed her legs together feeling a flood of moisture in her panties. Damn.

  “Really?”

He chuckled and started for the hallway. “Couples come here for fantasies right? Some like to take home the memories. That’s where I come in.”

It’s the heat. It has to be. Brooklyn licked her lips and met Channing’s eyes when she turned the corner into the bedroom. Smoky grey irises stared back at her, clearly aroused by the little movement her tongue made along her lips. To prove she wasn’t crazy, Brooklyn did it again and watched Channing swallow hard.

At least, I’m not the only one.

“I specialize in erotic art.” He grabbed his camera off the nightstand and pointed to the picture hanging over the bed. “That’s one of the thousands of pictures I’ve taken while on my six month contract here.”

“So you don’t actually capture couples having sex. It’s more of a tease?” Brooklyn shifted slightly reminding herself to keep breathing.

He grinned and checked the film. “Sometimes I do. It depends on the client. At Exotica Island, we cater to their wants and needs.”

For the millionth time in the last hour, Brooklyn’s mind landed straight in the gutter. “Every want or need?”

“All you have to do is ask.” He propped the camera on his hip. “What is it you need?”

  Embolden, Brooklyn replied, “You.”
