by Craig A. Price Jr.

“I’m no leader,” Devarius said. “I don’t know what to do next.”

  “You will do fine.”

Devarius shook his head. “What am I supposed to do next? How can we possibly defeat the Dragonia Empire?”

Ellisar’s mouth opened, but no words came out.

  Devarius leaned closer.

  “The dragon stone,” Ellisar whispered.

  “What?” Devarius asked.

  “Find it,” Ellisar whispered.

  He closed his eyes.

“Wait,” Devarius pleaded. “What is the dragon stone? What am I supposed to do with it?”

  Ellisar didn’t answer.

Devarius checked his neck for a pulse. There was nothing. Ellisar was dead. Devarius stood, running his hands over his close-cropped hair. Ellisar was dead, and now the resistance looked to him for leadership. He closed his eyes, cursing under his breath.

When he opened his eyes, everyone was staring at him. Everyone looked to him for guidance.

“We don’t have time to rest. We must reach the ships. Bring Ellisar with us. We’ll give him a proper burial at sea. There’s no time to waste.”

Without another word, he turned away from all the pleading eyes and walked south.
