Jack gave me a once over, then yanked Bree’s hand towards him. “Is that him?” I heard him whisper. Heading over to the sofa, I sat down, waiting for the two to catch up. A few minutes passed and a certain feline made her way towards me. Taking each step with extreme caution, she sniffed my leg and sat right beside me. Unsure of what to do, I just waited.
”Meow?” Tilting her head to the side, she walked onto my lap, curled into a little ball, and went to sleep.
“Wipe your chin, Jack. Your husband will be jealous you are drooling over another man.” I heard Bree say over her shoulder. Feeling her touch on my shoulder, I turned to see the hazel eyes that captured the beast inside me.
“Looks like she approves. Give me a few minutes and we will get started.” Placing a kiss on my forehead, she followed Jack into the kitchen.
Feeling the cat purr on my lap, I pulled out my phone to get a report from Matt Ryder and John Mosley.
“Any news?” I asked the moment Matt picked up.
“We found him camped out by her mother’s house. Prosser was able to detain one of his men, but he got away. The bastard is going after Brianna and her family. We need to get them the fuck away from here and out of sight.” Matt and John led the search to find Weatherford’s men the day Brianna was released from the hospital. Doc told Bree she was unable to travel for a week due to her injuries and needed to stay in bed to recover. Granted, we got reacquainted with each other fairly quickly during her ‘resting period.’
I had yet to inform her about what was going on in the dark. Weatherford was at large. Brianna needed to know what was happening. But the beast inside me roared its ugly head at the need to protect his love. No one has ever seen the part of me that will do whatever it takes to avenge his family. All I knew was death and destruction. Bree brought life back into my heart that day she spilled pie all over my pants.
“Find him.” I growled. Aurora seemed to sense something was off, when I felt a small paw on my cheek.
The night I almost lost Bree, I made a promise. If Weatherford thinks I will stand down and let him go after the people I loved, he had another thing coming.
