“It’ll come back to him.”
“And you…you know who you are?”
“Oh yes.”
“So what’s your name?”
The paramedic leaned in close as the boy whispered something in his ear.
Brennen approached the unscathed man. He wasn’t sure what was going on but he wasn’t about to let him just wander off.
“Hey your little friend is on his way to hospital. He’s a little delirious from shock and smoke inhalation but he seems healthy enough and I’m sure he’ll be fine.”
“Good. I don’t think you should leave him alone though.”
“He’s quite safe, we’ve got men looking after him.”
“I see. I meant I don’t think you should leave any of your men alone with him.”
“Why, what is he a ninety five pound badass? He’s a little confused, like you, but he’ll come around. At least he has a name for himself. Not his real one, but it’s a start.”
The young man looked at the fire chief for a long moment.
“What was he calling himself?”
Brennen shrugged and grinned.
“The King of the Dark. Does that mean anything to you?”
The man furrowed his brow and stared into space.
“Yes. I can’t remember what though. I’m sorry.”
“Don’t worry it’ll all come back to you soon. You were very lucky to ever make it out of that place unscathed. You got anyone we can call? Friends? Family?”
“I think I have some friends somewhere. I don’t know where.”
“Well once your name comes back to you, it’ll all start to make sense. Everything is going to be fine.”
The thin young man started to pat his ragged trousers down, searching for something.
“What you lost kid?”
He looked up at Chief Brennen and gave a hopeless little chuckle. He shook his head in exasperation.
“I can’t seem to find my glasses.”
