“Good, because the last thing I want is for you to imagine I could exist in this world, knowing you were in it, and manage to stay away from you.” Christian kissed Victor without provocation, heedless of how much emotion the touch of his lips carried with it. When Victor kissed him back, Christian heard the silent dialogue spoken only by their hearts. Those words they still feared speaking out loud.
Pulling away, Victor looked Christian in the eyes. “Dinner’s ready,” he said. “And it’s time for your question.” Another soft peck on the lips preceded Victor walking out from Christian’s arms. While Christian fetched their drinks, Victor prepared their dishes, bringing the bowls to the table and pausing first to smile at the candles lit on the table before beginning to eat.
Christian savored his first few bites, then paused in thought. “Your family,” he said. “I’ve told you about my brother, but never what he does for a living.”
“I take it this is amusing?” Victor asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Oh, yes. Amusing and ironic.” As Victor took another bite of food, Christian held onto his fork, lingering in the moment before delivering the answer. “He’s a constable. In a smaller town in Devon. And yes, he’s blissfully unaware of what sort of trouble I cause, though he knows it’s not entirely above board.”
“A constable?” Victor laughed. At first, his laughter was contained, until it seemed he replayed the idea in his head and surrendered to a heartier burst. Christian chuckled along, more content at the delight the irony had caused Victor than amused by himself. It took a moment for Victor to compose himself, but once he had, he paused to take a drink.
“Pardon me,” Victor said. “That has to be one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard. Do you think he knows now?”
“Quite possibly. I’ve been avoiding sending him a message.”
“You should say something to him, he’s probably worried.”
“Spoken like a true older brother.”
Christian raised an eyebrow, taking hold of his own drink. While Victor sobered, his expression remained laden with mirth. “I resemble that comment,” Victor said.
“You’re the responsible one. So is my brother, Jeffrey. Must annoy the piss out of your younger siblings,” Christian said. He took a drink at the same time Victor did and, like his lover, lowered his fork into the bowl to twirl at noodles again. “So, what do they do? I know you have at least the younger brother, but you didn’t mention what he does.”
“Because he doesn’t do much and that isn’t an insult. Our middle brother, Tommy, is the blue-collar worker of the family. Wesley is the youngest. He’s still searching for his place in life.” Victor sighed. “You two would get along like a house on fire, if just because of how much he makes me worry, too.”
“Bratty younger brother?” Christian winked.
“Yes, and you being familiar with that only has me more convinced I should keep you away from each other.” A smirk crossed his lips. Eating his food, Victor settled into finishing dinner, as did Christian. Later, though, while washing the dishes, Christian thought about their discussion, not wanting to admit the concept of a stable homelife still felt far removed.
“Maybe one of these days, I can meet your family,” Christian said. “I think seeing another family’s form of quirkiness might help me to feel better about my own.”
Victor hummed softly. This time, he was the one wrapping his arms around Christian from behind, his lips touching the side of Christian’s head.
“I don’t doubt that you will,” he said. “We seem to be stuck with each other, after all.”

A boy orphaned by violence grows up in the shadow of his father's murder. His older brother offers him a home, but the life of a farmer is a poor fit for Christian Richardson.
Set in England in the 1400s, the Wars of the Roses litters the country with plenty of jobs for a young mercenary trained in how to wield a sword. Christian grows out of his youth and becomes a capable fighter, one who inherited his father's blade. As a member of the Brotherhood of the Black Rose, he puts coins in his pockets and food in his stomach, but every day he searches for the sigil of the men who took his father's life.
Finally, after years skirting the edges of a group called the Luminaries, he'll make a discovery that will put him in reach of his goal. Vengeance.
The sword was not the only possession his father had given to him, though, and unbeknownst to Christian, the Luminaries have been hunting for Richard's son - the boy who escaped from them nearly a decade ago - just as he has been scouring for signs of them.
An almost successful attempt on his life reveals hidden gifts, and even more secrets that his father had taken to the grave. As Christian reaches the threshold of claiming revenge, he faces the realization that retribution might come at a high price. Will he listen to the pleas of his loved ones, cautioning him away from danger? Or will his pursuit for justice take him down a path from where he can never return?
