“I’ve always been a car enthusiast. My dad actively encouraged it. He wanted me to do something with my hands, in addition to following him into law. He believed that it gives a person in a thinking job a vital perspective on life.”
“Do you agree?” Amy asked.
“I do. Mom definitely doesn’t. I don’t dare tell her I’ve been hanging out at the garage while I’ve been here.”
“What could she do if she knew?”
“Nothing and everything. I’m completely independent of her financially anyway. I’ve got my own career, even if she is sure that I won’t make it without her meddling. I do despite my hearing loss, I live independently. But she is also Mom, and she spent a lot of time controlling my life. She knows how to push every one of my buttons, because she put them all there.”
“Well, I think you should keep hanging out at the garage and helping people. It makes you happy. I could hear it clearly in your voice when you were just talking to Brent.”
“It really does. It is the first thing that has really given me meaning in life since I was injured. Besides, what I discovered was that not everyone in town was like those three kids. They’re quite nice, actually. You should try to get to know them.”
She said nothing, so I said something that would help her smile some more. “The second thing is sitting right across from me at this table.”
Amy visibly blushed and got rather tongue-tied.
“Do any of the guys have really slow-moving cars? Nice antiques that take the roads at a leisurely pace?” she asked, and I felt crappy for talking about fast cars.
“A couple. Chesbro’s Bradley would be really nice for that.”
“And the engine is actually working now?”
“Yes. It may be ready for a ride before long,” I told her.
“Maybe he’d take you and your girlfriend for a ride when it’s ready?”
“Sounds like a plan.”
“While you were out yesterday, I did some researching. The law office in town closed up a while ago. I would have to take the Massachusetts bar to get a license to practice here. Not a big deal, just something that will take a little time.” I kissed her again. “And after I finished talking to Mom, I called Brent Hyde.”
“And?” Amy asked.
“He’s willing to take me on as a mechanic and even give me time to run a legal side gig for folks in town. Assuming you’d be willing to extend my lease on your cottage beyond the initial six months.”
“If we’re still happy with each other when the lease is up, let’s not talk about renewing it. Let’s talk about a different kind of living arrangement. Like you and me together?”
“I like that idea,” I told Amy. “I like that idea a lot.”
“Noah?”
“Yes?”
“Are we going to keep standing here talking all day, or are you going to take me for the ride?”
I laughed. “I’ll take you for the ride of your life.”
She kissed my lips, and I held her in closer, feeling happy and secure that the woman in my arms loved me from my head right down to my toes, and I felt exactly the same way about her. I got more than I could have ever imagined in moving to Berwick and now felt my life was finally on the right path, one filled with love and happiness.
