“What have you done to me, Xander?” The question was real. What the hell happened to her? Two weeks ago she’d been fine. Content. Now the thought of him leaving hurt like a dagger striking her in the chest.
“I can’t give you up, Kayla. If I have to come visit you for a few weeks at a time before returning to my heart stone, that’s what I’ll do. I don’t want to be away from you again.”
Kayla wrapped her arms around his head and pulled him to her heart. Lowering her cheek to the top of his head, she allowed her soft tears to fall into his silky black hair. “I don’t understand this, but I love you. I do. With everything in me. I’ve been so miserable this week.”
He shuddered in her arms and pulled away to look up at her. Lifting his hands to cup her face, he smiled. “Good. I was hoping you’d say that.”
She kissed him with as much tenderness as she could summon before tracing the lines of his beloved face with her hands. “How are the fairies?”
He chuckled and closed his eyes, leaning into her soft caress. “They are amazing. Glitter sent me after you.”
“She did?”
“Yes. I love you, Kayla. I’m under strict orders to bring you home. Glitter said you can have her DNA first. The entire fairy village wants to know if you can test them to discover who their ancestors were. Apparently, there is another fairy claiming to be descendant of a royal line, and Glitter is not at all pleased.”
Kayla’s heart flipped inside her chest. “You love me?”
“Totally and completely. I am yours, Kayla. If you’ll have me.”
“I love you, too.”
“Will you come back with me?” He frowned, the vulnerable look back in his eyes. “You don’t have to. I will stay here with you, if I must. I just can’t lose you again.”
What was here for her? A job she didn’t enjoy? Friends? Sure, but they could come visit her in Magic. Tracking the genetic ancestry of a magical fairy queen sounded interesting. But the best thing of all? Xander. Every day and every night. “Yes. Yes, I’ll come with you.”
His kiss stole her breath as he flipped her to lie beneath him on the long couch. “Good. Now I don’t have to pull out my ultimate weapon.”
She smiled up at the man she loved. “What’s that?”
“The firebirds hatched.”

About the Author
A #1 Amazon Bestseller, M.L. (Michele) Callahan is a science fiction and romance fanatic and full time writer whose earliest movie memories are of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and light sabers. (Still waiting on Santa to come through on that one.) She wrote her first short story at age eleven about five friends who fell into another dimension and had to save the Earth - all in ten, sloppy but action packed, wide-ruled notebook pages. Her mother inspired a love of reading and writing and Michele writes seven days a week. She writes sci-fi action adventure as ML Callahan, and romance as Michele Callahan.
