Conquering Darkness Memoir of the Serial Killer's Wife Page 22

by Crystal Reshawn Choyce-Lige

Life can be so strange behind our backs.

  …

I hope I have many occasions to go before women just like me to tell my story.

Too often, our happiness, our causes and our liberations are never defined as they truly need to be defined, discovered, advanced and made into proclamations we can live by in the spaces and places where we are most comfortable. I know this now because for so long, I suffered in silence until I remembered something from my childhood.

I remembered that when my mother suffered, she had done it out loud and in the presence of women who could so intimately understand and share her pain as she did theirs. This sharing would sometimes happen in our living room, or it would happen in the back room where my mother and her friends from the block would “get their heads done”. They would drink whiskey, press their hair, and listen to Brooke Benton, Sam Cooke and Nat King Cole. And by the end of the night, they (the women) would look like they had been lifted of something that had just hours earlier, weighed them down.

Lifted—that’s what I feel and I want to share how I got here!
