The Fine Art of Invisible Detection Page 34

by Robert Goddard

  ‘I don’t think I can.’

Silence falls between them. There is much Wada could say. But, strangely, there doesn’t seem to be much point in saying any of it.

Slowly, she stands and crosses to the dark green filing cabinet in the corner. She opens the bottom drawer, takes out one of the empty manila folders stored there, returns to the desk, sits down and writes in katakana characters on the front of the folder, then again on the inner edge that will be visible when the folder is placed in the cabinet.

‘What are you doing?’ asks Nick.

‘What Kodaka-san would have done,’ Wada replies. ‘I am opening a file. On Karl-Erik Fagerholm. And the source of his money.’
