The 2014 Halloween Horrors Megapack

Page 18

by Edith Wharton

But now Gwen was a very young and childish little girl of nine; younger than she had been before the wild days and nights when she seemed changed and old and herself a little cruel.

She wanted Mummie very much. So cables crossed the ocean, and Mummie came, and if she went so far again Gwen should go too. And Arthur! Arthur, who had had no one, became so happy and gay and even proud that Gwen sometimes fell into just a touch of cruelty again.

Enough to remind him that it was really she who had first thought of his belonging to her and Mummie for always.
