“You did amazing.” I kissed the top of her forehead that had been soaked in sweat.
The nurse handed over the baby and wrapped him in a blanket. Lucy cried as she watched her son wail out his first breaths in the most beautiful moment of my life.
“I can’t believe we have a son,” she said as tears trickled down her cheeks.
I kissed them away and kissed the top of my baby boy’s head. He was so soft and fragile.
“I will take care of him forever and will teach him one day how to be a man.” My chest puffed out in pride for the son I would get to raise to be a gentleman. I would never be ruthless with him like my father had been with me.
“He will receive nothing but love from me from this moment forward and for the rest of his life,” I said as I wiped happy tears from my own eyes.
I gazed at Lucy lovingly as she placed a large nipple into our son’s mouth. He began to suck happily and made precious adorable cooing sounds.
“This is truly perfect.” Lucy beamed from ear to ear as she held our son’s tiny hand that was balled up into a fist.
“You did an amazing job,” I admitted.
“It wasn’t all me,” she said and looked into my eyes, searching them.
“We made this baby out of love.”
“This baby is the definition of love,” she said.
“How do you mean?” I asked.
“He is the perfect blend of two different species that came together and met under the pull of the magical universe.”
I admitted that it was the perfect analogy. “Let’s call him Elijah.”
Lucy looked up. “Elijah. It has a nice ring to it. I think it’s the perfect name for a beautiful son.”
I held Elijah’s tiny-balled fist as he wrapped it around my index finger. Life was just beginning.
