“Of course not,” Devon said, still clueless as to what was going on. “I was going to suggest that Rebecca take you out to welcome you to the firm. I had no idea you already knew each other, though. Small world!”
“Small world indeed,” I murmured.
“Well, if you don’t mind, I’m going to leave you in Rebecca’s capable hands.” Devon looked to Rick. “I’ve got a lot on my plate today. Rebecca, I’ll meet you down in reception at seven, okay?”
“Sure,” I replied, trying to snap out of the trance caused by seeing Rick again. The last time I’d seen him was five years ago, and he looked even better than he did back then.
“What are you doing here?” I said, clenching my teeth so hard my jaw started to hurt, as we were waiting outside the elevator doors to go to the coffee shop.
“Starting work in one of the most prestigious law firms in New York,” Rick replied, taunting me with his tone.
“I’m serious, Rick. I know you. You wouldn’t have accepted the job without doing your research first. You wouldn’t have been able to miss the stories about my coming here when I won the contract for Douglas Leeson. What on earth are you up to? Why couldn’t you have stayed away? There are plenty of other law firms out there.”
The elevator doors opened, and I stormed in ahead of him, looking away as Rick followed me in and pressed the button to reception.
“Come on, Becky Boo.” I hated when he called me that. “Don’t be so upset. We’re going to be working together from now on. We might as well try to get along.”
“Try?” I laughed. “After everything I did for you and then you broke my—actually, you know what. I’m not going to talk about the past. I’m not going to give you the satisfaction. If Devon had talked to me before offering you the job, I’d have told him just how unsuitable you were for Caesar and Krause.”
“But clearly he didn’t, because here I am. I hear rumors that you two are a bit of an item. You can’t be all that close if he didn’t consult you before appointing an important member of his team.”
That didn’t help things at all. Rick had an uncanny way of pinpointing what pissed me off. Why hadn’t Devon talked to me? As far as I was aware, we didn’t need any more lawyers on the team, so what was he doing, going over my head and imposing a new member on me without asking first if I thought he’d be a good fit? What the hell was going on?
The elevator arrived at reception, and I trooped out ahead of Rick. I could hear him chuckling at me, which got me even more annoyed with him, with Devon, with everything. This was not how I planned on spending my morning, and it certainly wasn’t what I wanted to be doing on the day of my six-month anniversary with Devon.
The coffee shop was only a couple of doors down from the office building, and once I got there I went up to the counter. “Two large cappuccinos.” The barista probably thought I was rude. I didn’t say hello, or wasn’t cordial in any way, and I believed I might’ve just yelled at her.
“You remembered.” Rick smiled.
“I’m hardly going to forget five years of marriage.”
Life was about to get complicated.
