Faith snorted at that but didn’t say anything.
“I almost died when Mike called and said that you were getting married this week. I was certain that I wouldn’t make it in time to stop it.”
“Why?” She asked and he would swear that her heart was in her eyes.
“Because I love you Faith. I’ll say it as many times as it takes for you to believe me. The thought of you with another man is torment. I want to take you away with me, marry you and when we think the time is right I want to plant my seed inside you and watch you grow round with my child.”
She blushed but a smile tugged at her lips. “You’ll still love me when I’m fat with pregnancy?”
He felt his heart swell with so much more than love, with everything he felt for this woman in this moment. “I’ll love you every day for the rest of my life. And when you are round and glowing in the last stages of pregnancy I’ll cherish every moment, every inch and every pound that shows me how much you want me and my child. I’ll be your shelter, your comfort, your lover and your best friend. I’ll be everything you need from this moment on. I’ll love you with all I am and pray for the day when you’ll love me the same.”
“I do,” she whispered.
“What?” he asked to afraid to hope that she might already mean that she was starting to fall for him as well.
“I do love you.” Her small voice sent tendrils of warmth through him. “I used to find excuses to come into town when I knew that you were there. I would make up errands that needed to be done just to get a glimpse of you. The women in town all joke that the men may need some Jack Daniels but all we want is a little Jake Daniels.”
Jake could feel his cheeks and face warming with a blush and marvelled at what Faith could do to him. Then slowly his lips tipped up into a smile and he laughed out loud.
“What’s so funny?” she smiled up at him and Jake squeezed her tight against his chest.
“Here we were doing the same things to see each other and neither of us realised it.”
“Yeah, I guess you’re right,” Faith sighed and burrowed closer to him.
“You know what I was doing last night when you snuck in here to get warm and dry?” he asked her.
“What?” she whispered and he groaned at the feel of her tongue darting out to lick along his chest.
“Planning how I was going to kidnap you and convince you that you would be much happier sneaking off with me than staying here and marrying a man old enough to be your father.”
It was her turn to laugh now. “I sort of helped you out with that one, didn’t I?”
“You did,” he agreed. He glanced to the window where the sun was still making its way into the day. “How soon do you think they’ll come looking for you?”
She tensed beside him and glanced back to the window as well. “Soon. Dad probably already knows that I’m gone.”
“Then let’s get up and get dressed angel. My bike’s out back and if we hurry we can be gone before anyone even knows it.”
“Where are my clothes?” she asked and Jake grinned again.
“I hid them last night while you were in the shower.” He jumped out of bed and went over to the hidden door that led into the office. Slipping inside he grabbed her stuff off the desk and headed back to her. “Here you go. Hurry up and get some clothes on.” He was already pulling on a pair of jeans from a duffle bag that must have been under the bed. She sat up and looked down when she felt something cool against her thigh. It was the used condom from their last round of lovemaking.
“Lose something?” she inquired and grinned when he flushed again.
Jake pulled a shirt on and rounded the bed to remove the used condom from the bed but it had already spilled and left a stain on the sheets. He grabbed the opened box of condoms and placed them reverently in the duffle before pulling out a pair of socks and sitting down to tug them on. “Get going woman. We have places to go. Things to see.” His eyes turned to hers and there was no missing the heat in his gaze. “Love to make.”
“Again?” she whispered reaching for her fresh clothes in her backpack and hurrying to slip into them while he bent to put his shoes on.
“It’s only the beginning for us Faith.” There was promise in both his voice and gaze. “Only the beginning.”
For Faith it was the beginning of the life she had always hoped and prayed for.
Neither the man nor the woman noticed the man who stood in the shadow of the trees watching as they loaded their few bags onto the back of the big black motorcycle. He watched as they embraced, became lost in a kiss that expressed more than passion, but the beginnings of love as well. It was all he could have ever hoped for. He was a proud man and he paid his debts but some things were more important than money. His daughters were one of them.
He was a hard man and he expected his daughters to do what he said. He didn’t treat them with as much love as he should have and he was known to have a heavy hand at times. But he did love them and he refused to let his problems condemn them to a life they didn’t deserve. It was his debt and eventually he would find a way to pay it.
He watched as his oldest hopped on the back of the bike and headed out of his life, probably for good. It was for the best he reminded himself, though he did nothing to wipe the tears from his checks. He had loved their mother with all his heart and just hadn’t been thinking when he had made the deal after her death. The deal that had allowed him to stay on the farm and raise his daughters. It was only after it was too late that he came to his senses and realised what he had done.
But it was too late to change now. All he could do was try his best to make sure that each of his daughters escaped when the time came. After Faith’s disappearance he knew that Clifton would have his men watch the girls as well. He had three years until it would be Hope’s turn at the altar. Three years to make sure that everything was in place for her as well.
He might be a lot of things but only one thing was he proud of. He was a father to five of the most beautiful girls in the world. And one by one he would do what he had to in order to save them from himself.
