Chapter One
At first the message she read didn’t sink in as it was so obviously not intended for her eyes.
“Hi, sexy. Last night was awesome. Told Aly I’m working late again, so see you in usual place at 8,” followed by a bright smiley face icon.
Alyssa picked up her knitting and furiously started clicking her needles. A week ago her life had been full of promise. She and Sean were finally settled with new jobs and apartment. They had even started saving toward their future.
Her needles flew as she considered the number of nights Sean had “worked late.” She had accepted his explanation that he needed to establish himself in his new role and accepted that it was a necessary price to pay for future benefits.
Dropping yet another stitch in her work she threw the project across the room in frustration.
Aly’s job in the small local craft store suited her creative ways, and although the pay wasn’t much, it was a fair wage. The store held workshops as well, and it was an added bonus that in these she was able to be paid as she “worked.” There were a variety of people, including children, who came in to learn the various crafts the store provided for.
Jan Matelli, the owner of Crafty Cottage, was fast becoming a good friend, too. They worked well together as they seemed to have a lot in common, despite being from very different backgrounds. Whilst Aly had been orphaned at a young age and lived in foster homes for most of her life, Jan had been raised in a large extended family whose origins were in Italy. Despite this, they had clicked right away.
When she had agreed to accompany Sean to Canada, from her somewhat lonely and mundane life in England, it was the thought of a new life with new friends that had egged her on. Although she had a few friends she knew she could count on if needed, there was no special bond with anyone enough to keep her in England.
Sean’s parents were Canadian and he had painted a wonderful picture of the life there. Aly knew it was an opportunity that she couldn’t miss. His promise of marriage gave Aly the sense of security that she had craved all her life. She wasn’t sure if she loved him as she should, but she was fond of him and hoped that they could build on that in the future.
His relatives were from the small town of Huntsville, in the middle of lake country. That made things easy for him to move over, but for Aly, who was on a temporary work visa, it was a bit more complicated. However, the paperwork done and her small amount of belongings packed up into storage for the time being, she had embarked on the greatest journey of her life.
However, it had soon become apparent to Aly that although Sean had wanted her to come with him, he was rapidly doing a lot on his own. He still talked occasionally about marriage, but it seemed to have been put on a back burner. Their sex life had never been amazing but now it was almost nonexistent. Sean came home late each evening, many times after she had already gone on to bed. She had become no stranger to using her own hand to pleasure herself, and if she was being honest, the orgasms she gave herself were far above the halfhearted efforts that Sean attempted when they made love.
The previous night Sean had been late as usual. Aly had entered the darkened apartment, switching on the lamp in the hall and kicking off her shoes with a sigh of relief. Much as she loved her job, it was coming up to Halloween and the store was particularly busy, being the only craft shop in the immediate area.
As she ate a solitary microwave dinner in front of the TV, her cell buzzed with a message. Laying down her fork, she picked up her phone and read the text, expecting the usual excuse of work from Sean.
The blood drained from Aly’s face as she re-read the words on the small screen again. Her mind flew back to Sean’s words as he left th
is morning.
“Bye, love. Don’t forget I have that meeting tonight, so if I’m late, go on to bed and I’ll go sleep in the spare room so that I don’t disturb you.”
He had bent to kiss her cheek as she answered with a nod and grimace. “OK. But you can’t keep this up, Sean. I know your job is important to you but this is the third time this week you’ve had meetings. It’s not fair on you to make you attend every one of them, just because you’re new.” She turned toward him and smiled. “And you know I miss you when you’re out so late.”
Sean’s face screwed up with irritation as he snapped, “Well, you know this is important to me and I need to show I’m willing if I want to progress in the company. Do you have to keep nagging me about it?”
Her face had fallen as she said, “I’m not nagging, Sean. It’s just that I think they are taking advantage of you being new and it’s really no fun for me, sitting here night after night alone.”
She was trying not to whine, but it was becoming such a regular occurrence that she was getting fed up with it.
“I thought we were in this together but you’re rarely home and when you are you’re always so tired you just flop on the sofa and fall asleep in front of the TV. Even at the weekend you’re off playing golf or something else with ‘the boys.’ All I ever seem to do is work, clean, do laundry and shop for and cook food you’re always too tired to eat! What was the point of me coming halfway across the world with you if you don’t want to be together?”
Realising he needed to placate her, he had given her a quick hug and headed to the door.
“Aw, baby, of course I want us to be together. I just have to do this to get on in this firm. They appreciate the work ethic and I can’t be seen not to have it.”
He shot her one of the boyish grins he always used when he wanted to get round her and quickly slipped out of the door. As usual Aly backed down from the argument and called after him.
“Well, take care and don’t work too hard. Would you like dinner kept f…?”
But Sean was gone before she finished the sentence. She sighed.
I’ll take that as a no then.
Muttering under her breath, she turned back into the room and started her own preparations for work.
Chapter Two
Now she sat, numb with disbelief, as she realised that she had been taken for a fool. It appeared that Sean had been seeing someone else when he said he’d been working. Meanwhile, she had sat at home, seemingly safe in the knowledge that he was doing it all to help secure their future together. He knew her well enough to know that she wouldn’t have the courage to go out on her own and socialise. In fact he had probably been banking on her natural shyness to keep her at home whilst he was out, obviously having fun with someone else.
Her social life to date had consisted of a quick drink after work with Jan on an occasional Saturday evening at the local bar. It was nice to kick back after a busy week in the store and Aly always enjoyed Jan’s buoyant company. She had a confidence Aly knew she could never attain. They never stayed late though and she was usually home, alone, by nine at the latest.
Jan was engaged to Brett Linden, a large, good-looking man whom Aly had met several times when he had returned home from work to the apartment above the store. He was tall, blond, well over six feet with the body of an athlete, and Aly had to admit he intimidated her a little. There was an aura about him that she couldn’t quite place. He was always very polite to her but there was a look in his eye that made her insides quiver. His voice was deep and authoritative as he spoke to her and she often found herself wondering what it would be like to have a gorgeous man like this to look after her, in a way that Sean never did. Brett was a well-built man and he could well feature in any one of the many erotic novels that kept her company on the long evenings she spent alone.
On those lonely nights, she would usually have a long bath in her favourite scented oil, then settle into bed with the latest book on her e-reader. The highly erotic stories that she read, most with a BDSM theme, would soon get her hot and her hand would slide down between her legs and start to circle her tingling clit. Her nipples would harden and her breath would start to quicken as her arousal rose. She would then slip a finger into her hot pussy, and as she finger fucked herself, the heel of her hand rubbed against her clit until she shuddered and came, her pussy gripping her fingers rhythmically as she slowly came back to earth, panting and breathless.
Doing this always made her feel a little ashamed, as if she was being unfaithful. This, despite the fact that the past three times she and Sean had made love, he didn’t even bother to satisfy her, just grunted his completion as he pumped into her and then rolled over and started to snore.
Now she knew why he wasn’t interested in having sex with her. His needs were being met elsewhere.
Jumbled thoughts raced around in Aly’s head as she tried to make sense of what was happening. Should she confront him? Leave him? Go out and find him and confront both of them? She had never had to deal with anything like this before and she was scared out of her wits as to what the future might now hold for her.
She knew that there was no way she could stay with someone who was unfaithful. She deplored lies in any shape or form and she just couldn’t forgive someone lying to her on this scale.
What was she going to do?
She paced up and down the room, thoughts flying, and then suddenly stopped.
She needed advice and the only person she knew who could help her was Jan. It was a Thursday evening so she knew Jan would be in. She and Brett rarely went out on a weeknight, saving their evenings out for the weekends. It was then that they frequented a club, down near Gravenhurst, where they were members.
She picked up her phone and quickly dialled.
Jan answered on the second ring.
“Alyssa? Hi, hun, what’s up?”
“Jan. I need…” She stopped on a sob as she struggled to get the words out. “I need some advice…can I come over?”
Jan’s reply was swift.
“Of course you can, sweetie. Are you OK? You sound upset.”
Aly swallowed hard.
“I just need some advice. I think Sean’s been having an affair.”
“Oh, hun. Of course you can come over. I’ll be here. Brett’s going out so we can talk in peace.”
Aly thanked her and rang off, tossing her phone into her bag as she slipped her shoes back on and grabbed her coat.
Pulling the door behind her she left the apartment building and headed for her small car in the parking space nearby. Sliding behind the wheel she took a big breath and set off for Jan’s place above the shop, just off the main street in town.
* * * *
Jan hung up the call with a shake of her head. Her suspicions about Sean seemed to be right. Every time Aly talked about him “working late” she had been tempted to say something but her natural common sense told her that she wouldn’t be believed and that would only cause bad blood between them.
Now it looked as though she might have discovered the truth. Being right in town and knowing most of the local business people, Jan had heard rumours about the “new English guy” and his dalliances. He wasn’t much liked in the town bars as he was brash and mouthy, rubbing locals up the wrong way with his bragging. He liked to tell one and all about his conquests, single or married, and people were starting to talk. Now the talk was centred on his dalliance with the daughter of his boss, who was a work colleague. Lindsay Temple was well known in Huntsville as a bit of a “femme fatale” and if she had decided that she liked Sean, there would be no stopping her.
Just then, Brett walked in, having just showered and changed after work. As always, Jan’s mouth went dry at the sight of him clad in skin-tight jeans and black T-shirt, her panties moistening as always at the barely concealed lust in his eyes.
“Down, boy!”
She pushed him away as he bent to nuzzle her neck. Reluctantly pulling away she went on, “Aly has a problem.
Quickly she outlined what she had been told. She gave him a quick kiss and pleaded, “Any chance you could go for a drink with Aiden? Aly’s on her way over, and she’s going to need some space. You know you intimidate her, you big bad Dom!”
He grinned as he recalled the way Aly always backed away from him whenever he got near her. Her nervousness always made him smile but now he realised that she was likely to go into a blue funk if he was here when she arrived.
He smiled but ground out, “I knew I should have slugged that asshole last week when I saw him with that slut from Marketing Magic. I didn’t realise she had her claws into him that hard. Aly sure wouldn’t be up to competing with her. She’s way too innocent!”
Jan hugged him, relieved that he hadn’t taken it upon himself to interfere, saying, “Well, I’m glad you didn’t, because she had to find this out for herself. I know what you think about her but she’s never actually admitted to being submissive and we can’t know for sure.”
He grinned.
“Whatever you say, sweetness. But you and I both know that she is…but just doesn’t know it yet. I could stay and prove it to you but I’ll go visit with Aiden for a while and leave you girls to it.”
He grabbed his keys and leather jacket from the stand in the hall and she blew him a kiss of thanks.
His return grin made her shiver in anticipation as she knew she would be paying him back later, or at least she hoped she would be.
Brett and Jan had been together for six years. It was Brett who had first taken her to the kink club just outside Gravenhurst, introducing her to the delights of BDSM. She had been surprised to find herself to be naturally submissive. In business and in life in general she was a strong, wilful woman, but when it came to sex she had been more than happy to give up control to Brett. It gave her a freedom she couldn’t quite understand, but knew it was something she needed as much as the very air she breathed. As their relationship had progressed, she had bloomed and Jan thanked the gods every day for bringing him into her life. It was because of her own experience that she was always keen to help others who might want to tread the same path. Never in a million years had she thought she might be submissive to any man. Brett had shown her differently, and she found that, in the bedroom at least, it was always the sub who held the power.
