The blow never came, however, and she opened her eyes to see that Terrance was standing beside her now. He caught the swing from the woman, who was now staring at him strangely.
“It’s okay,” he said softly. “You are with friends now.”
She released the stake and let him take it from her gently. He assisted her back to her room and she lay down without a fight. Once she rolled over and went to sleep, he exited the room and approached the stunned administrator.
“That was amazing!” she exclaimed.
“Sometimes a gentle touch is best, I suppose.”
“I want to fire you just so I can hire you all over again.”
Terrance grinned and they finished their tour. Once they returned to the ground floor, she thanked him all over again, for both saving her life and helping the patient.
“It’s no problem, I’m just glad I could be of use. If I may ask, do you think you can help her?”
“I hope so. She was a victim of domestic violence or something. That’s usually what it is when they ask us to check a patient in under a false name. Hers is now Adonia Snow. I’m not sure if that’s better than Veronica Edmonds or not, but maybe it will be more peaceful.”
“I certainly hope so. I think she needs a lifetime of peace.”
They parted ways and he was cleared by the front desk and walked outside. Tomorrow would be his first day for work here, his first of many days, for he would watch over her for as long as it took for her to get better. It was a favor for a friend, long gone now, but never forgotten. And the former witch would never have to be alone again. Ever.
