“On the charge of first degree murder, how does the jury find the accused?”
“Guilty,” she said.
The judge was talking, but Jason didn’t hear it. All he heard was that one word. Guilty. He heard it over and over again. He wanted to stand up, to explain, to make them see, but he couldn’t.
The word echoed through his mind. Guilty. Guilty. Guilty.
His last thought as he was led away to begin serving his life sentence was this: Kelly, I’m sorry, please forgive me, wherever you are.
