She eyed the newspaper. “New York Times?”
Holy shit. The review. The show.
He nodded, his face growing somber. “Are you ready for this?”
She lay back in the pillows and covered her eyes with her hands. “I don’t know. Am I?”
She heard him set the paper and coffee down on her side table but hadn’t managed to look at him.
“How are you feeling this morning?” There was a nice tease in his voice that warmed her from the toes up.
She gave him a tiny grin and finally opened her eyes. “Fucked.”
He laughed. “I’ll bet.” He moved toward her and tugged at the sheet covering her, exposing her breasts. He blew on her nipples and they immediately hardened. He sucked one and then the other into his mouth.
“Are you trying to soften the blow?” she asked, arching into his mouth.
“I don’t know,” he murmured over her. “Is it working?”
“Maybe,” she said. “We could always go back to South Carolina and work the community college and wedding circuit together.”
He stopped and stood up. “I don’t think so.”
“You don’t want me to go with you?” she asked, a knot forming in her stomach.
He shook his head. “Not to South Carolina.”
The breath squeezed out of her. He held his hand up and grabbed the paper. He cleared his throat. “There’s a new talent bursting on to the cabaret scene by the name of Avery McGinnis.”
Avery squeaked and sat up.
Dan smiled and continued, “Part Barbie doll, part Betty Boop, Ms. McGinnis teases her audience into a frenzy of longing. Playing out her innocence with large eyes and too many clothes, she pulls layers from herself as each article of clothing is removed in a display of vaudevillian genius. Her sensual show is offset by her willingness to risk everything, a punch to the gut of tradition and a breath of fresh air in an otherwise very tame venue. She acts her way through each of her songs, adding comedy and seduction into her numbers, her raw talent playing off the heat between her and her piano player, Dan Jacobs. Her show culminates with an existential re-imagining of Is That All There Is that leaves no doubt in anyone’s mind that Avery McGinnis will be cabaret’s new darling.”
“Oh my God,” Avery whispered.
Dan gave her a heart-stopping grin. “I told you.”
She grabbed the paper from him and read the article again as his hands played over her shoulders. “It’s like a love letter from the New York Times. The fucking New York Times.”
He chuckled and leaned forward to kiss her neck. “Indeed.”
“They mentioned you, too.”
“Yes, but it’s not about me,” he said, sliding his hands up her neck. “You’ll get lots of opportunities from this. You could probably work with anyone you want.”
Avery dropped that newspaper and turned to him. “Danny Piano, are you trying to get out of being my creative life partner?”
He shook his head. “No. But I don’t want you to feel obligated to me. I really could go back to South Carolina. Or even find other work here.”
She pulled him onto the bed and straddled his lap. Her hips ground against him and she smiled when she felt him grow hard beneath her. “You’re not going anywhere.” She leaned over and grabbed his nipple between her teeth. “I didn’t come this far without risking everything. I thought you knew that.”
He grinned at her and slid his hands between them, circling her clit until her eyes started to glaze. “Yes, Avery, I know. I’m risking it too.”
He slid his fingers into her and she groaned. “Good. Now get your dick inside of me so we can go to breakfast and brag to everyone about our New York Times review.”
He slid his pants off his hips and grabbed a condom from the side table. “Yes, ma’am. Whatever you say. It’s your pussy after all.”
Her body slid on top of him, her hips riding him hard and fast until he pressed his fingers over her clit and she screamed. His release followed and she coiled into his chest, her breathing heavy, a smile on her face. “Your damn right it’s my pussy,” she said. Her fingers traced his nipples and down to his cock. “But I can be very generous with it when I want.”
