The Legacy: The Weight of Magic, Episode 2

“Nicky?” Sam called, and I turned around.
“We’re going to the Grill, to play some pool,” said Connie. “Nathan’s already there. You coming?”
“You guys go. I’ll catch up with you later. There’s something I need to do first,” I said, then headed to my car.
I stopped by the florist, got some flowers, and drove to the graveyard.
The day was a bit chilly, and before getting out of the car, I grabbed my jacket from the back seat, put it on, and headed toward the wide gates.
As I reached my parents’ graves, I replaced the old flowers with the fresh ones and sat on the ground in front of the gravestone.
“Hi, Mom. Hi, Dad. It’s me.” I pushed back my hair. “Dad, I got your message. I want you guys to know I’m not angry with you. Not for blocking my magic, not for keeping from me that you have a house in New Orleans. Yeah, Nathan told me. I also want you to know he’s keeping his word to you and looking out for me.” The tears started running earlier than I hoped they would, and my voice shook. “Dad, don’t worry, I’m not scared. I’ll do the best I can, and I promise I’ll be careful.” I wiped my face. “I miss you guys, and I love you.”
A car passed by behind the fence. Disturbed, the yellow leaves covering the road took to the air and swirled behind it.
Late September had always been my favorite time of year. To me it was the most beautiful and cozy part of fall, when the colorful layer of leaves on the green grass hadn’t yet been hammered to the ground by rains, and when it wasn’t warm anymore, but it wasn’t too cold either. It was the turning point.
