Mintwood's Magical Map Page 18

When Greer announced that she was engaged, we all erupted in joy. There were yells all around. Charlie was so happy she started screaming and bouncing in every direction. Jasper looked at me and grinned. Hansen was beaming. I gave Greer a huge hug.

Paws turned slowly a few times on his crate, then hopped off of it and left. No one noticed but me.

We all settled down a bit except for Charlie, who turned to Hansen and grabbed his face between her hands. He immediately wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her close. Then they kissed each other soundly to another round of cheers.

Greer nudged me and nodded with satisfaction, while Jasper and Deacon talked quietly.

“It’s long past time those two got together,” Greer said.

“Long past time another twosome did something as well,” I told my best friend.

“Yeah, yeah,” said Greer. Her cheeks were rosy and she was positively brimming with happiness.

Deacon was grinning from ear to ear as they told us the story.

Charlie seized Hansen’s arm and sat next to him, her face alight with pleasure. Hansen’s cheeks were tinged pink, and he was smiling slightly.

“She thought I was going to break up with her!” Deacon cried with amusement. “My life would be an empty shell and I’d be lost without her and she still thought I was going to break up with her!”

“That’s because you were being downright shady!” she grumbled. “I mean, come on. You know it’s true.”

Deacon just shook his head. “Anyway, she came over and was already mad. Like, she’d decided what I was going to do and she wanted me to get on with it. I was totally confused as to why she was in such a bad mood. While we ate dinner, she nearly threw the salt at me. She told me she didn’t like my cooking—even though she had always like it before. She was so over the top that I considered not even asking her tonight.”

Deacon laughed softly as he clutched Greer’s hand even tighter. “But I’d waited long enough. We both had. Jasper will tell you. It took me weeks to work up the nerve to ask in the first place. I couldn’t postpone it again.”

The six of us talked long into the night. I couldn’t remember ever being so happy, dark ghosts or no. Greer and Deacon were planning a summer wedding. Charlie had finally given in to her feelings for Hansen. Jasper and I were together. He knew who I was and he loved me anyway. I knew who he was and I loved him back.

What else could I ask for? Let the celebrations begin.
