After All I've Done Page 26

by Mina Hardy

Val has moved out of town, and one day she might let me know where she went. She didn’t want to take the money I insisted on giving her, but in the end, she did. We owe each other debts that can never be repaid, but as it turns out, death is cheaper than divorce. I could afford to be generous to my oldest friend, the sister of my heart.

We don’t talk about those final moments when she knelt beside the man who’d come between us. I would never accuse her of not doing enough to save him, of not even trying. But Val and I both know the unalterable truth.

Letting someone die is not the same as killing him.

For now, it’s enough to see my cherry red Camaro sitting in the driveway. You’d never know she was ever broken. Unlike mine, her scars are invisible.

It’s also enough that my insane ex–mother-in-law/biological mother is locked up without any hope of release, not in her lifetime. It’s enough, too, to know that the woman who raised me did not, in the end, come back into my life and then abandon me on purpose. There’s another “what might’ve been” in that story, but at least this one lets me sleep at night.

  Without the bad dreams.

  AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY

Mina Hardy writes books. Usually, they feature good people making bad choices, but sometimes they might be about bad people making good choices. Either way, everyone is basically a mess, and you shouldn’t trust any of them. From twisted tales of domestic suspense to darker stories of bumping in the night, you can expect thrills and a few chills.

This is a work of fiction. All of the names, characters, organizations, places and events portrayed in this novel are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Any resemblance to real or actual events, locales, or persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental.
