Val has moved out of town, and one day she might let me know where she went. She didn’t want to take the money I insisted on giving her, but in the end, she did. It’s also enough that my insane ex–mother-in-law/biological mother is locked up without any hope of release, not in her lifetime. It’s enough, too, to know that the woman who raised me did not, in the end, come back into my life and then abandon me on purpose. There’s another “what might’ve been” in that story, but at least this one lets me sleep at night.
