  Chapter 34

As Havoc sped through the barren streets Donnie played Bonnie to his Clyde, keeping an eye out for danger, down for her man. Smitty once told his son that you can judge a man’s power by the actions of his woman, and right now Havoc felt like one of the most powerful men alive.

Suddenly a funny sound erupted from underneath the hood along with a hiss and a cloud of thick smoke. The music died and the engine followed.

“No-no-no! Don’t do this to me baby! Please, not now!” Havoc begged as his crash-damaged engine overheated and seized up coming to a slow halt and stranding them in the middle of a shapeless grotesque neighborhood filled with crumbling tenements and 24/7 bodegas.

“What’s going on, why are we stopping here?” Donnie asked darting her eyes everywhere at what appeared to be the bleakest part of Brooklyn.

“This can’t be.” Havoc said shaking his head dumbfounded at the dashboard.

  “What’s wrong?”

“Not sure, but for one we’re losing gas. Practically on ‘E’. But that’s impossible. I keep a full tank in her at all times. Just what the hell is going on?” Havoc asked opening his door then immediately got his answer when he stepped into a noxious puddle trailing from underneath his car and out into the street. “Shit! The fuel tank is ruptured.”

  “But how?” Donnie asked.

Havoc shrugged. “I’m no mechanic, but she’s an old car that’s taken a lot of abuse. Bullets, a tractor trailer slamming into us. Jumping that flatbed and crash landing so hard. Could be any of those things or all of them. But it doesn’t matter. What does is that we’re-” he paused when something shinny flickered in the rearview mirror and he spotted a multitude of car’s headlights approaching in the not so far distance. “Everybody out, NOW!” he shouted tearing off his sister’s seatbelt.

Everyone scrambled out into the street that was so narrow two cars could barely travel down it side by side. The hum of car engines sounding like hundreds of angry hornets grew dangerously close and Havoc spun at Donnie.

“Take Tee-Tee and keep heading up the block. I’ll catch up in a sec.” he said trying his best to keep his wits.

“But what’re you going to do?” Donnie asked worriedly.

“…Say goodbye, to an old friend.” Havoc said sadly. She had no idea what that meant but trusted he would take care of things and left with Tee-Tee flanked by Mayhem. After they were gone he pulled out a Newport and placed it between his teeth.

Speeding like a crazed banshee, the black Mercedes Benz led a procession of cars racing wildly towards Havoc. Disregarding them he calmly sparked up and blew a thick white billow of smoke through his nostrils. He gently stroked his car’s mangled hood reminiscing about how many times Code Red saved his ass in a lot of daring situations.

When Donnie, Tee-Tee and Mayhem reached the end of the block Donnie looked back and gasped. “Why the hell is he just standing there?” she asked aloud. “What are you doing? Come on!” she shouted frantically but Havoc ignored her. Even Mayhem barked concerned.

“Well baby, looks like we’ve come to the end of the road.” The Trouble Consultant said choked up like he was breaking up with a lover. Then with a heavy heart he dropped his cigarette onto the ground and it quickly ignited the puddle of gas. Unable to watch, Havoc turned his back and jogged away as Code Red became engulfed in flames.

The procession was closing in fast, seemingly hell-bent on mowing Havoc down when suddenly a thunderous ground-shaking explosion occurred. Havoc was knocked off his feet and the black Benz hit the brakes. Cars crashed into each other creating a chain reaction of accidents and rear end collisions as Code Red created a flaming roadblock. The timing was so perfect it almost seemed as if Havoc’s beloved automobile saved his ass one last time.

Havoc reached Donnie and Tee-Tee then looked over his shoulder as the black Benz and remaining cars circled back and disappeared around the corner. “Dammit!” he said. Any minute they would be coming up the opposite block. With his car up in flames, he had no way of transporting them to safety. Tee-Tee asked her brother a question and he stifled her trying to think then noticed for the first time, the dull smell of salt water off the Atlantic shore. He studied his surroundings and recognized where he was at, and what he was near.

Havoc checked the clips in both guns. “Come on!” he said grabbing his sister’s arm and running. “I know a place where we can go!”
