  Chapter 1

Chase held the phone to his ear and turned to Meaghan. “It’s work.”

  “At this hour?”

“Give me a second, okay Meg?” Chase said, vaulting quickly from the bed and heading into the living room, out of earshot from her.

“I don’t think I heard you right,” he whispered into the phone at Jose.

“You heard me,” Jose said firmly. “The shop’s been raided.”

“How can something like this happen?”

“It happens. That’s the business. Listen for a second. You need to keep your mouth shut if the police comes to your door. We figure they must have been monitoring the place, so they’ll know everyone who works here. If they show up, you don’t know anything.”

  “You can’t be serious.”

“I’m dead serious, man. You don’t know a thing.”

I can’t believe this. So is the shop closed?”

“For the moment, yes. No one will be there, except the crime scene investigators or whatever. Don’t bother going by there.”

“Do you know if they’ve done anything to Mr. Moscov? Or my mom?”

“I don’t know. For now, just lay low, and say nothing. If you can do this, there’ll be a job in it for you at the end of all this. If you can’t…”

  Jose hung up.

Chase’s stomach dropped. He had to have that talk with his mom after all. Meaghan walked into the living room.

  “What’ wrong?” she asked.

This was not the time for a confession to Meg. He needed to know more before he could tell her anything. Breathing deeply, he tried to hide the worry on his face before turning to look at her. He smiled over at her. “It’s nothing big.”

“Don’t lie to me, Chase. Since when does work call at this hour? And for them to keep calling over and over again…I wish you wouldn’t treat me like I’m stupid or naïve.”

“Meg, please, I can’t talk about it right now, okay? I promise I will, but not right now.”

For a second, he was sure she was going to push the issue with him. Instead, she wrapped her arms around him. “Okay. But you’d better keep that promise, though.”

Relieved, he held her close. “Let’s get back to bed. And I think I’m ready to have that serious talk with Mom.”

She looked up at him, her face awash with joy. “Really?”

  “Yes. I think it’s time.”

She pulled back from their embrace to study him. “Wait…when did you decide? Because we spoke about this yesterday, and you said you needed time. And now, in the middle of the night, after a call from work…now you’re ready?”

Chase didn’t answer. He nodded down at her, lips pursed, eyebrows raised, forcing a smile.

“Chase does this have to do with that call you just got? What’s going on at work?”

“Don’t worry about it, Meaghan. Everything’s going to be fine,” he answered, taking her hand as they walked back to her bedroom.

“Are you trying to convince me of that, or yourself? Because you look worried, Chase.”

She climbed into bed and he got in on the other side. He shook his head. He couldn’t hide it all from her like this. “Okay. There’s a problem.”

  “What kind of problem?”

“I’m not positive yet. Can you give me until tomorrow to talk to my mom? I need to try and figure this out.”

The way she looked at him really was not encouraging. “How bad is it?”

  “I don’t know.”

At least that wasn’t a lie. He wasn’t on the books for working that night. He had overheard, seen and participated in things he shouldn’t have before the shop was raided.

“For now, I don’t want to think about it. I just want to go to sleep. I’ll deal with this tomorrow, and I promise I’ll tell you everything I can after I speak to mom. Can we leave it at that, Meg?”

“For you, yes.” She ran a hand up through his hair. “I’m worried about you, Chase.”

“I’m a little worried too,” he admitted. “Let’s try to get some sleep.

  ***

The next morning, Meaghan eyed Chase. He was really trying. He suggested eating in the kitchen. She knew it was only to appease her so she wouldn’t grill him about whatever was going one. He even offered to make breakfast. She couldn’t turn it down. This she had to see.

Sitting at a chair at the dining table, she watched in amazement as the man moved about the kitchen with the grace of a master chef. Dressed in nothing but a pair of boxers, he was the epitome of manliness. And that tattoo on his shoulder and arm, God, she loved his ink.

With his back to her, she decided to surprise him. She undid the belt of her robe. She had nothing on underneath that robe. Chase was humming as he swung open the freezer door and pulled out eggs and ham. Omelets. He said he was making omelets and he didn’t want Meaghan’s help.

He found the ingredients, from what she could see around his bulky, manly back. After mixing everything in a bowl, he searched the cabinets and found a saucepan. Before he had a chance to turn on the stove, she snuck up on her tiptoes and wrapped her arms around his ripped trim stomach.

Chase moaned. “I’m almost done, Meg.”

He kept mixing the bowl. She pressed tightly on his back to get him to stop. He turned around and realized what she was up to.

“Mmmm. You look tasty,” he said, leaning down to kiss her. “I can’t touch you yet. I’ve got eggs on my hand.”

“I’m only hungry for one thing right now, Chase,” she admitted.

  “And what’s that?”

  “You, between my thighs…”

“Mmmm. I like the sound of that.”

“You’re so sexy when you cook like that.”

“Cook like what?” he asked, turning back to the sink to wash the food off his hands.

  “Like you own the kitchen.”

She pressed up against him and rubbed her breasts across his back. He turned to her, staring down at her open robe. His eyes trailed down her breast, to her stomach, and further still. She could tell he was getting interested. His eyes darkened and a heated gaze washed over his f
ace.

  “You’re practically naked.”

“And you will be too,” she teased.

She slipped her fingers into the side of his boxers and began to tug them down his legs.

“Let’s got back to the bedroom,” Chase groaned.

“I think I want you right here baby,” Meaghan purred.

He placed his hands on her shoulders, and stroked down her sides and cupped her buttocks.

“If that’s what you want, that’s what I’ll give you, baby.”

He lifted her up and carried her over to the dining table, and lowered her to sit on the side. The look in his eyes alone turned her on. At this height, able to look him in the eye, she was so turned on. She leaned forward and kissed him hard on the mouth. His hands were no longer around her waist. He slid them up to find and massage her breasts.

She spread her thighs apart and wrapped her legs around his waist, pulling him between them. She wanted him close. She wanted him inside her. His body heat radiated through her. His cock was hard, pressing on her stomach, making her wet and so ready for him. His kiss intensified. Her tongue swept through his mouth and tangled with his. His cock hardened even more. She whimpered into his mouth, unable to hold back the sound. He growled in return.

Yanking free from her breasts, he ran his fingers through her hair and pulled her head back, exposing her neck. He kissed her throat, whispering tender words on her skin. If she were standing now she would buckle. He made her feel so weak with sexual hunger.

He licked down the length of her neck, nibbling her collarbone, and kissed his way back up behind her ear. By the time his lips wrapped around her earlobe, she was undone. She trailed her nails down his back and into the hard flesh of his firm ass. She pulled him closer to him, and shifted forward to the edge of the counter. She wanted him inside so badly.

“Come inside me, Chase,” she moaned.

“Are you sure?” he whispered in her ear. “Right here in the kitchen?”

“Yes, baby. I want you to fuck me now...”

“Baby you don’t ever have to ask me twice,” he said, claiming her mouth for one more kiss.

As he did, she pushed off him slightly, just enough to reach down to his cock and begin stroking it. She titled her hips back, held his rock hard cock in position, and tilted forward again. His cockhead was inside her now, and she loved the feeling. Chase must have enjoyed it too; he grunted and groaned and thrust his hips forward, filling her completely.

He moved in and out, plunging deeper every time. Meaghan rocked her hips as he penetrated her, her arms behind her on the counter, holding herself at an angle that gave his cock access, and made her want to explode. He grasped her hips and sped up, ramming deeper inside her, bringing her closer to her peak.

“Fuck. Oh Chase, this feels so…so good,” she muttered.

He held her still and sped up even more.

“Come for me,” he whispered, holding her still as he pounded into her, sending her straight to ecstasy. She came apart as the sensation rose up in her. She couldn’t stop herself from moaning so loudly, anyone in the hallway could hear them.

She wrapped her legs around his waist and begged him to come deep insider her too. He leaned forward and sped up his assault. Meg held on to him, kissing his collarbone to help him as he slid over the edge to his orgasm. He groaned and growled as he released his wet heat into her, holding her so tight she could barely breathe.

“I love you, Meaghan,” he whispered in her ear, struggling to catch his breath.

  Chapter 2

Chase was still aroused from Meaghan’s playfulness. He wanted her again, but she had to get to work that morning. She hurried from the kitchen and got dressed quickly. When she left the apartment, he took a breath. He had not been able to process the news from Jose before now. He had to be calm and not worry Meaghan. Now she was out of the house, he was distraught and anxious.

He needed answers. He would go see his mother. He took the job without any thought, because his mother was married to the auto shop owner. If this was the kind of person she now associated with, he would have to cut all ties. And if she didn’t know, he needed to warn her. He had no desire to be a lawbreaker coming out the gate. She didn’t raise him that way, so how could he possibly start to consider it now.

He phoned to see if she was available to talk. She answered on the first ring.

  “Hello?” She answered.

“Hello mom,” he said with hesitation. “This is Chase.”

“Hi son. How are you doing?”

“I’m fine. I was wondering if you had some time for us to talk. In person.”

“Of course, son. Can you come up to the house at around two o’clock next Friday afternoon?”

  “You can’t meet me today?”

“I can’t son. I’m out of town for the next week. Is there something you’d like to talk about on the phone?”

“I don’t know if we should.”

  “Why not?”

  “It’s about the job.”

“What about it, son? You don’t like it? I heard you were such a talented mechanic.”

“It’s not that. Mom, haven’t you heard…about what happened last night?”

  “What happened?”

“I can’t really talk on the phone, Mom. I’m not sure if it’s safe.”

“Son, you’re worrying me…Maybe you can come out here. Can you and Meaghan get a week off?”

“I can. I’ll have to find out about Meg. Where are you?”

“New York. I’m attending an auction, and doing some shopping for some art Yuri wanted. I can get Yuriy to buy both your tickets, if the two of you are willing to come keep your mother company. Well, find out if you can and phone me back, okay?”

  “Yes. That works.”

“Is everything else okay with you, Chase?” She asked, probably hearing the nervousness in his voice.

“I hope it will be after we talk, Mom. I’ll call you back soon.”

Chase hung up. He had hoped she would be able to shed some light on everything, but now he had to wait. He had a shower and got dressed, and busied himself with cleaning up the apartment. After about an hour, the phone rang, and Chase answered it without thinking.

  “Hello?”

“Hey, Chase.” It was Oliver. “Have you heard?”

  “Yeah, I heard, Oliver.”

  “How are you doing?”

  “I don’t know.”

  “Have you told Meg yet?”

  “No.”

  “Do it soon.”

  “Why, man?”

“The police may come to your door.”

“Why would they come to me? I wasn’t there last night. And I’ve not been involved in anything.”

“True. But they may come to get a statement from all the auto shop employees. Maybe as soon as tomorrow.”

  “I can’t believe this shit.”

“Yeah, but it comes with the territory. Be ready for them when they knock on your door. When that happens, you have a choice. You can tell them the truth. They are probably going to threaten you with jail time for being an accessory.”

“What? But I didn’t do anything wrong!”

“Just make sure you don’t say anything. In the end, the cops aren’t really interested in you. They want the men at the top. They may grill you, or offer you protection in exchange for what you know, or they may do both.”

“I don’t believe this is happening. Look, I can’t talk right now. Can we talk about this later?”

“Sure. I’m not doing anything today. You heard the shop is close?”

“Yes. José told me not to come in. How about we meet for a drink around four in the afternoon?”

“No. We need to meet now. Come down to Lucky’s bar. Be here in twenty.”

  “Shit. Okay. Later man.”

Chase hung up. It was unbelievable. They expected him to put himself in even more trouble by lying to the police. The way Oliver made it sound, either way, Chase was scr
ewed. His mom had to have much better answers than this.

  Chapter 3

Chase sat at Oliver’s table when he made it to Lucky’s bar. As it was still early, Oliver had decided to have breakfast.

“You’re thinking about her again, aren’t you?”

“Am I that obvious?” Chase asked.

It hadn’t taken long for the two men to get to know each other at the auto shop. By now, Oliver was aware of how little Meaghan knew. He was one of the few people Chase could talk to at work. The two men had been working side by side lately, before the raid took place, so they often chatted. Today, they were both likely out of jobs. The only thing was, all Chase could think about was Meaghan. He needed to tell her soon.

Oliver dug into his omelet like a man who hadn’t eaten in a week. “Do you think she’ll tell you to get lost when you finally admit it to her?” he asked between bites.

“I left her this morning, with a promise to tell her everything by tonight. I can’t blame her if she dumps me, but I’ll be begging her to give me another chance.”

“And what if she asks you to quit?”

“I’m not coming back, Oliver. I won’t get any deeper into this illegal shit.”

“Yeah, but if you do that, you won’t have a job. It doesn’t sound like a silver lining to the cloud, buddy.”

“Maybe not.” He took a long drink from his cup of coffee. “But I’m making the choice now.”

“Why are you going to this extreme?”

“This was supposed to be a summer job. I earned a lot this last two months. I can survive if I have to, but what I can’t survive is jail time. I won’t put Meg through that. She’s my best friend, not just someone I’m dating.”

Chase sipped his coffee, wishing he could turn back the clock. If he could, he’d stop himself from ever accepting that job.

“She may be your best friend, but I think you’re walking away from pure gold.” Oliver leaned away from his empty plate.

“I don’t know about that. I’ve never been in trouble with the law before.”

“Could have fooled me, with all those tattoos on your arm, and that bad boy stance of yours.”
