  CHAPTER ONE

  ALLISON

I’m staring down at the blonde standing at the foot of my porch stairs who’s interrupted my delightful late lunch on a splendid sunny afternoon. I’m still trying to wrap my head around her preposterous claims.

A few minutes ago, I was basking in the afterglow of an incredible day that started in the arms of two of the most seductive men I have ever met in my life and now I’m staring into the furious eyes of a woman who’s come out of nowhere and says she’s Jake’s girlfriend. To make matters worse, the overdressed, over-sexualized and over-the-top woman whose red luggage is sitting in the middle of the ranch declares she’s moving in.

I’ve been here for several days and there’s never been talk of any Lindsay—not once.

I try my darnedest to remember if I had the girlfriend talk with Jake and Hunter, but for some reason I’ve been under the impression they were both single. Isn’t that what Riley was lamenting when I first arrived? Now I’m faced with the fact I wasn’t inquisitive enough before jumping into bed with two strapping hunks. Is she really Jake’s girlfriend? And is she moving in? Surely Jake or Hunter would have mentioned something this morning before going about their day.

I’m sure I’m gaping in shock and I fail to find the words to continue this ridiculous conversation. I guess I really have no right to claim either man, but after last night’s toe-curlingly raunchy ride where I shared both men, standing here in front of this brash woman who’s looking to put an end to a good thing, I can’t contain the wave of jealousy inside me.

I need to compose myself. Fast. I don’t want to give Lindsay the satisfaction of knowing her words have crushed me. How stupid could I have been? How could I have believed either of these men could be mine, let alone both?

Since I arrived at the ranch, my life has been a rollercoaster of hedonism. On my first night, Jake seduced me and I simply couldn’t resist him. The next day, although I had promised myself it would never happen again, I allowed him to take me in a secluded barn with my arms and legs shackled in ropes—bound like a dirty girl. To make matters worse, I had sex with Jake’s best friend on the same day inside the cabin.

I blame years of neglect for my promiscuous actions. It’s as if my body was dictating and my mind simply gave in to my sexual urges.

Then how do I explain last night since I gave myself freely to both of them? My God, Jake stroked his cock while watching Hunter fuck me and I enjoyed every second of it. I could’ve walked away at any time after the men made their intentions clear, but deep down inside I wanted both of them—together. Does it mean Lindsay is here to sabotage my perfect life?

She purses her lips before speaking again. “I’m sorry, are you just going to stand there staring at me or are you going to get your phone and text either Jake or Hunter? I’m melting out here and I need to get off my feet. Not to mention I’m thirsty and I’m starving.”

The bitchy blonde’s remark wakes me up from my shocked state and forces me to pay attention to her again. I look Lindsay up and down with an expression that’s one part surprise and one part may-I-vomit-now, but I decide to keep my feelings to myself.

“I apologize. It’s been a very long day. I’m sure you must be tired. Why don’t I text Hunter and Jake to find out when they’ll be back,” I answer in a softer tone. “Perhaps I can take you to Riley’s office and you could wait there while one of them gets back to me. It’s cooler and you’ll be able to sit.”

I turn on my heel and approach the table where I was eating to grab my phone. I could invite her to sit on my porch, but there’s no way I can be next to this woman without dissolving. She’ll see right through me and she’ll know her arrival is causing me grief.

I furtively look at her from the side and bite my lower lip. I’m nothing like her, but Jake said the most incredible things about my body.

Confusion and worry creep up as I’m faced with the brutal reality Lindsay might be here to burst my bubble. I grab my iPhone and search for Hunter’s name. Thank God we exchanged phone numbers yesterday. I could text Jake instead, but I’m hoping Hunter might be able to make sense of things before my drop-dead-gorgeous blue-eyed lover comes back from his business meeting in Denver.

Lindsay is still fanning herself and I’m just about to dial Hunter’s number when all of a sudden he strides towards my house. When the thin blonde follows my gaze and sees him approaching, she throws her hands up in the air and starts running towards him like a child greeting a loved one.

  “Hunter, it’s me.”

I haven’t got the slightest clue how that woman is able to run in her five-inch heels in such a skin-tight skirt, but she meets Hunter halfway. She jumps into his arms, but something is off. Usually when you’re happy to see someone, you greet them with open arms before embracing them. Hunter is standing with his arms pinned at his sides as Lindsay twines herself around him like a koala bear hugs a tree. The way she’s squeezing him, it almost looks like he’s choking. His eyes are bulging and when he meets mine it’s as if they’re saying, What the fuck?

“Lindsay. What are you doing here? And why is there bright red luggage in the middle of our ranch?” he says, frowning down at her.

Since I’m frantically trying to understand who this woman is and if she’s telling the truth, I take several steps closer to be in earshot of their conversation. I know I might be a bit neurotic about this, but I just can’t help myself. I have no intention of sharing either Jake or Hunter with this woman.

“Hunter. Seriously, you didn’t think it was over between Jake and I. I understand he doesn’t want to move back to San Francisco, and I respect that. So after a lot of soul-searching, I decided to quit my job and give
up my apartment. I put most of my stuff into storage and I packed a few belongings to move in with him. Before we take our relationship to the next level, we have to at least live in the same city, right?” She looks so smug and so proud of herself. Honestly if I could bitchslap her right now, I would.

“I’m really happy about this newfound sense of direction, Lindsay, but did you discuss any of this with Jake before arriving?”

“You look as dumbfounded as Riley’s new assistant,” she says, pointing at me.” I hate her. “Sometimes you have to take the bull by the horns in order to get what you want in life. Right now, I want Jake and I want us back together as a couple. Scratch that, I need us back together again.”

Oh, God. I think I’m going to puke.

  CHAPTER TWO

  HUNTER

I’m approaching the ranch with Dirk and Jenkins in tow when a limo drives off.

Jake and I asked both men to stay later tonight since we have another cow about to calve. Jezebel, the expecting mom, has been very temperamental all day yesterday and all day today. It’s only a matter of time before she calves and having my manager and an extra worker on staff for a few additional hours will make my job much easier.

My intention is to go back to the office, but when I see that long black limousine, I’m curious to find out who’s arrived. Since we aren’t expecting any visitors, I tell the boys to come get me if Jezebel gives any signs of calving while I go to check up on things. Since Allison is still a newcomer, I want to make sure she doesn’t have to deal with any unforeseen situations.

I don’t know whom I expect to see, but I sure as hell never imagined Lindsay would be standing there chatting it up with Allison.

The minute I see her bright red luggage parked in the middle of our ranch, I know we’re in for trouble. Don’t get me wrong, Lindsay is a charming woman in her own way. I wouldn’t say we’re friends, but the few times I’ve hooked up with her and Jake in Denver to party, I had fun. When you get a few drinks into her, she even lightens up. She’s extremely sexy and from what Jake has shared she’s pretty hot in the bedroom, but she’s a handful. I’m sure one day she’ll meet the perfect guy she can walk all over, but at the best of times she acts like a prima donna and at her worst, Lindsay can be a real bitch.

Jake always met her in Denver when she came to visit him, at a hotel not far from the airport. He most likely talked about our ranch during the time they were seeing each other, but he’s been careful to never bring Lindsay around. He was afraid once she set foot on our property, she’d cling on to him for dear life, never wanting to leave.

Now she’s holding on to me as if she’s drowning and I can tell from Allison’s unimpressed gaze the two women aren’t likely to get along. I push Lindsay slightly away from me so I can breathe again.

“How did you find the ranch?”

“Oh, that was easy.” She takes a step back and looks up at me with a beaming smile. “When I got into Jake’s truck to go for dinner a few months before he decided he needed a bit of space”—a whole lot of space, to be exact—”I noticed some documents on the dashboard while he was getting gas. I casually opened them and I saw the name of your ranch and the address. I made a mental note and I took a snapshot with my phone for good measure. And here I am.”

Sneaky. “It might’ve been a better idea for you to give him a heads-up before showing up.”

“Perhaps I should’ve warned him, but I think my being here will help us make some decisions about the direction of our relationship.”

I think Jake is very clear where this relationship is headed. “Lindsay, you must know Jake well enough by now to know he’s not a fan of surprises.”

“He hasn’t been returning my calls and my text messages. I got fed up, so I decided drastic measures would force him to listen. We were a great couple and I know if I’m close by we’ll be able to rekindle our romance. After all, he can’t keep ignoring me if I’m right in his face.”

Wow, is she ever in for a rude awakening.

The last thing Jake expects is a possessive ex-girlfriend desperately trying to weave her way back into his life. When he sees her, all hell will break loose.

“I was telling Riley’s assistant over there,” she says, pointing at Allison, who still has this bewildered look on her face, “that my feet are hurting, I’m starving and I’m dying of thirst, but she’s been very unhelpful. I had to press her twice before she finally made the effort to let you and Jake know I’d arrived. Why don’t you show me to Jake’s house and I can wait for him there,” she purrs, sliding her hand up my chest. “Maybe I can wait for him under the covers… if you know what I mean.” She flashes a grin and when I catch Allison’s nauseated expression, I nearly burst out laughing. Nope, these two aren’t going to be best friends—ever.

There’s no way in hell I’m going to get in trouble with my best friend. I’m playing it safe until I get him on the phone.

“I’m happy you met Allison. She’s a fantastic new addition to our little family and she’s been a godsend to Riley. To be fair, she didn’t expect you and neither did we. Why don’t I take you to our office and you can cool off while we wait for Jake to come back? He should be back from a business meeting in Denver any moment now.”

“That one said the same thing,” Lindsay meows, pointing at Allison again, “but the way she delivered her message made me think she was brushing me off with some bullshit story.”

To this day, I have no idea how Jake managed to date Lindsay for five months. I would’ve strangled her within five hours. She’s way too high-maintenance for me and I think the only reason my best friend stayed that long was because her pussy was lethal and she was open to just about anything. It’s not entirely Jake’s fault since Lindsay played her cards right. She didn’t reveal her catty side until Jake started to think there might be a future with her. The second she had any leverage on him, she turned like the wind.

“Let’s seek shelter from this sun and I’ll get you some ice tea to quench your thirst.”

“That sounds absolutely wonderful,” she says, wrapping her arm around mine. “Wait, what about my luggage? Can you bring my suitcases to Jake’s house?”

I’m not your manservant and furthermore Jake would kill me with his own two hands.

“Your luggage is safe right where it is. I’d rather Jake make that decision once you speak to him.”

“What are you saying? Jake won’t be happy to see me?” She looks alarmed and I backtrack.

“It would be presumptuous of me to speak on his behalf, that’s all.”

There’s no way I’m touching that question with a ten-foot pole. Lindsay is manipulating her way into Jake’s bed and knowing him, he’ll be extraordinarily ticked off. I turn around and call out to Allison, conscious of the fact she’s been witnessing this whole conversation without a word. I’m sure it must come as a shock to her given what we shared last night. While Jake and Lindsay duke it out, I’ll have to explain things to her so she knows Jake hasn’t been playing her for a fool. “Why don’t you join us?”

She jerks her head back as if my question hits her across the face and points at her chest, as if someone else is standing next to her. “You want me to follow? Oh, I still have so much to do before dinner.”

I can tell from her expression she’s lying and I can’t help but smile. “I think your work can wait,” I say, gesturing at her to tag along. “While Lindsay cools off, maybe you and I can talk?”

She grabs her keys and her phone. “Fine. I’ll come,” she lets out like a very pissed-off teenager.

We’re making our way to the office when Jake’s Range Rover comes raging down the road. I can tell from his expression how annoyed he is by our unexpected visitor. This isn’t going to end well.

Lindsay immediately lets go of my hand and races to meet my best friend. Holy hell, that must be the shortest skirt in history. I didn’t appreciate how revealing her skirt was when I first approached her because I was too puzzled by her
presence on our land, but now, watching her run away from me, I’m sure if I cock my head to the side, I’ll catch a glimpse of her panties… or lack thereof.

Jake comes to a screeching stop, cuts off the engine and gets out of his vehicle. The minute he slams the door shut behind him, Lindsay starts campaigning like a politician seeking more votes.

“Oh, snookums, I’ve missed you so much,” she says, jumping in my best friend’s arms.

Jake is so taken aback he doesn’t react when the blonde slams her chest into his. One would think it’s a joyous reunion, but the fact that Jake’s arms are still wide open instead of embracing the woman nestled in his arms speaks volumes.

“What the hell are you doing here, Lindsay?”

Before she can answer, Jake turns his attention to Allison and when I pivot my head to look at the blonde standing next to me, I’m surprised by her indignant stare.

“I don’t want things to end between us, Jake,” Lindsay pleads, dropping kisses along Jake’s chin.

“I’m pretty sure I was quite clear about us ending things a month ago, Lindsay. You think showing up here unannounced on my property will change things?”

Jake’s voice is deceptively calm, but I know him well enough to know he’s raging inside. Lindsay’s manipulative ways will only end up distancing them. I’ve seen Jake in the toughest negotiations and you can’t break him. Jake is able to keep his composure under any situation. Lindsay can storm as much as she wants, but there’s no way she’ll ever see Jake’s bedroom.

“Why don’t we go inside your house and we can talk about things… in private?”

I watch in shock as Lindsay slides her hands between Jake’s legs and grabs his cock. She squeezes his dick, closes her eyes, tilts her head backwards and moans as if they’re behind closed doors. Holy fuck.
