Huh? “Panic? I don’t understand any of this. Why in the world would he drop by your place again and, more importantly, why would you even open the door?”
“Trust me, I nearly slammed the door in his face, but the way he was begging for me to listen… it made me think maybe I should hear him out. After all, you’re my best friend and when he said it concerns you, I was all ears.”
“Puh-lease,” I say, rolling my eyes. “What could Clark have to say that was so urgent? And why would you believe it has anything to do with me? We haven’t been together in over three months. He’s part of my past now. I’m sure his relationship with Paula, the woman I caught him cheating on me with, is blossoming beyond belief and his über-successful investment company with his business partner Jasper is raking in millions of dollars every month.” I snort with disdain.
“Clark says he’s been trying to get a hold of you for the past few weeks, but you’ve been ignoring his calls and his text messages.”
“Gwyn, this conversation is getting weirder by the second. Since when do you care about Clark? I thought you made it clear I needed to move on and put him behind me, which is exactly what I’ve done. Why are you all of a sudden interested in his futile calls and his fake-urgent text messages?”
“Your ex was trying to get a hold of you because of a very serious matter. Frankly, I’m surprised you never told me about this in the past and I’m a little hurt I had to hear it from a person I have very little respect for.”
“What are you talking about?” She’s driving me mad with this cryptic conversation.
“You’ve always claimed you had no other involvement in Clark’s company other than co-signing the lease to his extremely expensive Manhattan office space.”
“I don’t. I’ve been honest with you from the beginning. Why would I lie?” I’m so confused right now.
“According to Clark, you’re the treasurer of his company.”
“The what?”
Gwyn is the most straightforward person I know and I’m puzzled as to why she’s skirting around the real reason why she’s calling. “You know, a treasurer. The watchdog who oversees all aspects of financial management in a company. It’s like being a company’s money-keeper.”
Instead of answering her preposterous accusation, I start laughing hysterically, slapping my free hand against my thigh and stomping my foot against the floor until her words put an end to my amusement.
“I don’t think you’ll find it so funny when I tell you Clark stood in my kitchen and looked me square in the eye before divulging that twelve of your investors were suing the hell out of you in a monster class-action suit against Venture App and its principals. And since you’re the treasurer at your ex’s company, they’re suing your ass as well.”
