Short Stop to Love

He chuckled as he said, “I had this whole speech planned. I was going to profess my love and how much better my life is with you in it. But, I find myself not caring about that. Right now, I just want to know if you’ll marry me.”

Keri blinked at him. She could hear women shouting.

  “You better say yes!”

  “If you don’t, I will!”

  “What are you waiting for?”

“I’d marry you every day for the rest of our lives if they’d let me,” she whispered.

Jeremy grinned. “So, that’s a yes?”

Keri nodded furiously and tears clouded her vision. “That’s definitely a yes!”

With a jubilant laugh, Jeremy pulled the ring from his pocket and slipped it onto Keri’s shaking ring finger. He stood and pulled Keri to him, kissing her. The crowd cheered and she vaguely heard the announcer saying, “She said yes, folks. It looks like Jeremy Glass is officially off the market.”

He pulled back and grinned at her. “Now that I’ve got the girl, let me go win a ballgame.”

She pressed one more kiss to his lips and swatted him on the behind before stepping back so he could rejoin Jacob on the walkway. He walked through the cleared path and disappeared. A camera filmed the dugout and he entered a few moments later. She blushed as she remembered their tryst the previous year.

Live footage on the big screen showed Jeremy getting claps on the back from his teammates and she couldn’t stop smiling. This was it. All the pain and unhappiness she went through in her early life made her who she was today. Those experiences shaped her future choices and led her to her prince. Now she finally got her happily ever after and it was worth every minute.

  Glass Officially Off the Market

That collective groan throughout the city? It’s the sound of women sighing at the news that Jeremy Glass is now engaged. Yes, you read that right. In a move that surprised many, he staged a proposal at last night’s home game against San Diego.

Last night’s game was the first his fiancée, Keri Robson, has attended this season. Leading up to it, there was much speculation about the state of their relationship since they haven’t been pictured together recently. They started dating over a year ago and were the subject of quite a bit of salacious gossip in the beginning.

After revealing their sweet story to the masses, they quickly became the it-couple of the city. They recently bought a house together just outside the city limits. Though its location is closely guarded, sources say it’s a sprawling mansion that boasts its own baseball diamond and library.

Yesterday’s proposal is a cherry on top of this whirlwind romance. Surprising Ms. Robson, the large screen showed photos of their time together, some of which the public hadn’t seen before. Once it finished, the surprise was evident on Ms. Robson’s face when she saw Glass sitting next to her in the stands.

The crowd erupted when he dropped to one knee and had a conversation with Ms. Robson that ended with her saying yes while crying. We haven’t seen an up-close shot of the ring yet, but we can only imagine how beautiful it is.

As they prepare for their wedding, I’m sure I’m not alone in wishing them the best and hope that I get an invitation in the mail.

  Joann: You’re engaged! Holy shit!

  Keri: Yep.

  Joann: Why didn’t you call?

Keri: You texted me. Why would I call?

  Joann: Besties, that’s why.

  Joann: Why haven’t you responded?

Joann: You’re doing something dirty aren’t you?

Joann: I need to bleach my mind.

Allison: Thanks for the heads up.

  Jeremy: You’re welcome.

  Allison: That was sarcasm.

  Jeremy: I know.

  Allison:…

Allison: We need to draft a release.

Jeremy: I got engaged. There. You’re welcome.

  Allison:…why do I bother?

Keri bit her lip as she watched the early morning sunlight play over the ring gracing her left hand. She couldn’t stop herself from staring at it. It caught the light just right and sparkled no matter how much she looked at it.

  “It won’t disappear.”

Keri jumped and tilted her head to look at Jeremy. They were in bed, naked, and he looked sleep rumpled, his eyes barely open.

“I know that,” she said, rolling to cuddle into his side.

“Then why are you staring at it like it will?”

Keri stuck her hand out so the ring caught the light again. “I can’t help it. It’s just so pretty!”

Jeremy chuckled. “I’m glad you like it.”

“I don’t like it. I love it. Just like I love you.”

Jeremy’s fingers threaded through her hair and she smiled. This was it. Contentment. Elation. Perfection.

“Can you put the rock up? You’re blinding me,” Jeremy grumbled.

“Maybe if you’d let me put blinds and curtains up, you wouldn’t have this problem,” she said, swatting his side.

Jeremy laughed. “Maybe I want to enjoy the view.”

“You can enjoy the view later when we’re not in bed. I’m buying blinds.”

Jeremy rolled suddenly, pinning Keri beneath him and making her laugh. “We’ll see who wins this argument.”

Her laughter turned to moans as Jeremy went to work, their argument forgotten for another day.

Jeremy: Are you ready to surprise everyone?

  Keri: Yes. Let’s do it.

Jeremy: How do you think they’ll react to our elopement?

Keri: We might need to hide for a few months. You can take the time off right?

Keri: Husband. I like that. Husband. Husband. Husband.

Jeremy: No more than I like calling you wife.

  ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

This novel wouldn’t have been possible without a whole host of people. I have so many amazing people in my life that support me in this, but I can’t possibly name them all.

First and foremost, my beta team. Y’all have been amazing. You read through my chapters and gave me feedback that was so important. Without y’all, I’m pretty sure this would have never gotten to this point.

To my critique partners, you probably heard more out of me than they wanted. You are both the real MVP. You replied to e-mails and Facebook messages, always telling me if my thinking was good or bad, in no uncertain terms. I appreciate you not telling me to go somewhere with my crazy ideas.

To my friends that encourage me to continue writing even when I feel like I shouldn’t, thank you. It’s hard to put yourself out there by writing since it’s such a big piece of you. Without your continued support, I’d probably be reading like crazy and writing for myself still.

To my family, words can’t explain how I feel. You’re supportive, even if you don’t quite get it. That’s enough for me.
