Mine Would Be You: A Bad Boy Rancher Love Story (The Dawson Brothers Book 3) Page 78

by Ali Parker

“Damn, that was so hot, I nearly forgot to pull.” He found the pink towel I had used earlier and wiped up his mess.

“It’s okay. I’m on the pill, and despite your average rocker’s reputation, I don’t sleep around.” I didn’t want him to think I was anything like Mona, who I still had to fire. She’d shown up to go onstage, but she had me worried up until the very last moment.

“Good to know we’ve both changed since high school.” He rolled over and lay on the bed a minute to catch his breath. There was an image of us reflecting in the tacky mirrored ceiling. The band before us had it installed, and I’d inherited it.

We made a handsome picture, the two of us.

I reached over and brushed his hair away from his face. “Those rumors about me weren’t exactly true, you know.” I had the reputation of being a lot easier than I was, and aside from Leonard, I’d only slept with one guy and given a blow job to another. It wasn’t half as bad as some of the other girls, especially considering I’d had as many chances.

“It hardly matters anymore, does it? But I will say, you’re really amazing.” He laughed, shaking his head as if he had something more on his mind.

I was content to lay there with him for a while and snuggled closer, hoping I might even be able to convince him to stay. It would be nice to wake up in his arms and have someone who wasn’t going to wake up in the morning and forget all about me.

“This is nice, isn’t it? It’s like old times when we were kids, just lying here together.”

“Yeah, we had some good times.”

“You know, I finish up this tour in a few weeks, and I’m planning on heading back to Chicago when I’m done. It would be nice to get together, and maybe we could reconnect. You know, maybe give something a chance to happen for us?”

He smiled but gave me an overly sympathetic look. “Come on, Kya. We both know that would be a mistake, right? I mean, you said so yourself five years ago. I think we should just keep things friendly. I wouldn’t want to ruin our friendship by trying to date.”

My face fell, and while I rolled over to find my robe, he got up and found his pants.

“I just thought things could be different, is all. I mean, we’re both different.”

“Are we, though? I mean, at my core, I’d still say I’m the same guy I was five years ago.” With that, he walked out of the room and down the hall. I got up and went after him, hoping he’d talk to me instead of leaving upset again like he had before.

“Hey, wait up. Can I at least get your number so we can stay in touch? I mean, it’s what we do, right?” I felt like a desperate fool running out after him that way, but I really wanted to stay friends.

He turned and looked down at me and then leaned over and gave me a kiss on the cheek. “See you around, Kya. Congratulations on getting everything you wanted. It looks good on you.” The door slammed behind him, and I stood there stunned, unable to process everything that had just happened. He’d run out on me again.
