You may think that passing a ball is as simple as tossing it in the air in the direction of one of your teammates. However, to become a great passer, there is a lot to think about before you let the ball leave your fingers.
As you pass a ball, hold it with both hands. Use your hand furthest away from your target to push the ball, and the other one to guide it. Your hands should end up in the direction of your target after letting go.
A successful rugby pass must be of the correct strength and height and be on target.
TARGET: Remember to look at the player you wish to pass the ball to and swing your arms in their direction. If your pass is not accurate, it may not be caught.
STRENGTH: If your pass is too soft it will not reach your target. Too hard, and it will hit them too vigorously. Practise passing from different distances to learn how hard your passes should be.
HEIGHT: This is similar to your strength. If your pass is too high or too low it will be difficult to catch and may be dropped.
Did you know that waiting to pass can be just as important as passing the ball? Sometimes, players want to get rid of the ball as soon as they gain possession of it, but take that split second before you pass to consider your options. Consider who you are going to pass to and whether they are ready to receive it.
Why not try this training drill to improve your passing strength?
Stand a metre away from your partner. Pass the ball to them, remembering correct positioning and technique. If they catch it at their chest, your partner should pass the ball back to you. Whenever both of you successfully pass and receive the ball, both of you can then take a step back. Now the passing distance is greater. How far can you go?
