Now, sitting in the apple tree with darkness all around him, he unbuttoned his shirt and pressed his hand against his chest.
His heart fluttered beneath his skin.
The barrel of the .45 was cold. Shivering, he drew back the hammer. He had thought about this a great deal. He knew what he was going to do, but somehow could not believe that he was going to do it. His finger stroked the trigger. A light came on in the house where the old lady lived. He saw her in the kitchen window. Her head was bowed. In a moment she would look up, and see him. He held the sweet potato in his left hand. Its skin was smooth and firm. He willed the old lady to look out the window. If she would only look up, she was sure to see him.
As he waited, he slowly increased the pressure of his finger on the trigger.
