He offered out his hands, hoping to deter Slater from bursting into action. The ramifications of laying a hand on official military personnel would be disastrous. He was fully aware of the man’s penchant to fly off the handle.
He silently pleaded with Slater to obey.
The steel bit tight into his broken wrist, making him grunt. He broke out in a cold sweat. Slater glanced at him briefly, then looked at the approaching soldier.
‘Don’t,’ King whispered, barely audible.
‘He’s right,’ the nameless man said to Slater. ‘Listen to your friend. You make a single move and we’ll put a bullet in your skull.’
Slater stayed frozen, still as a statue, like a lion stalking its prey. The tension amplified as the Navy soldier reached hesitantly for his wrists.
The soldier locked the handcuffs into place.
Slater bowed his head and let out a long exhale. King imagined he had been milliseconds away from action.
King let out the breath that had caught in his throat.
They would live to see another day.
Shackled by the wrists, the soldiers led them to a darkened corner of the cabin. King and Slater were thrust into the hard plastic seats. Their handcuffs were fastened to steel rings near their groins.
They weren’t going anywhere.
The nameless man checked — then double-checked — their restraints. Satisfied, he gave a curt nod to the soldiers and made for the door at the other end of the fuselage.
‘Back to the carrier,’ he said. ‘We’ll throw them in with Isla until we sort out this mess.’
The chopper’s nose dipped as it took off. King’s stomach dropped. Freezing water dripping off his clothes pooled on the seat below. He shivered involuntarily.
The realisation that he was a prisoner washed over him.
He exchanged a glance with Slater as the ramifications of what they had done began to set in. There were no records of their employment — or even their existence. They had spent a decade working for the most secret government organisation on the planet, toiling away in the shadows as contracted warriors.
They could be locked away in a military black jail for the rest of their lives — and no-one would be any wiser.
The CH-53K powered away from the Russian coastline.
King closed his eyes, rested back against the hard plastic headrest, and sighed.
He knew that from this point on, nothing would be the same.
