I rushed to Dominic. He pushed the body on the fallen Inquisitor off him and sat up with a moan.
My heart felt like it was in my throat. “Are you all right?”
He rubbed his neck and his voice came out hoarse. “Yeah.” He shot me a glare. “You were supposed to run.”
“I’m not good with directions, if you haven’t noticed.” I took his wrists and unlocked the cuffs. “Besides, where would you be now if I had?”
Xavier approached with the Inquisitor at his side. “I think many of us would be dead. We owe you our gratitude.”
I tried to shrug it off even though a sense of elation rose in my chest. “It was nothing.”
“No need to be modest. You’re quite the witch. A true boon to us.” Xavier looked to the Inquisitor and pointed to Victor. “Take him away. His body shall be burned and the ashes buried in an unknown grave. His family name shall be stricken from the Order.”
The Inquisitor dragged Victor’s body through the side door. An old witch knelt next to Larissa and Aaron, applying pressure to the wound on Aaron’s chest. Several witches and Warlocks had started binding the fallen witches and warlocks who had been possessed. They weren’t all dead after all.
“Dominic Rizel. Ava.” Xavier paused as if trying to recall my last name. He never would. “As the true murderer has confessed and been judged, you have been found innocent. You are free to go.”
With that Xavier strode to a wounded witch and began tending to her.
“Looks like I saved the day,” I said.
“Indeed. Quite amazing.” He stared at Aaron who was picking up the middle chair belonging to the High Warlock. “If only I had been as good.”
I rested my hand on his shoulder. “You couldn’t have been with your father every moment and he had protections that were supposed to keep him safe.”
He turned from the High Council table. “A lot of good they did him.”
“At least we brought his murderer to justice and stopped a hostile takeover,” I said.
He gave me a rueful smile. “You did that.”
“I couldn’t have if you hadn’t saved me from that ker, twice,” I said. “And summoning the Fates was your idea. We make a good team.”
He brushed a stray lock of hair from my face. “We should continue as one.”
I took his hand in mine. “Well, let’s start here. I think the Council is going to need someone to keep them organized.”
Three Months Later
I stood in the antechamber of the High Council chambers and straightened Dominic’s robe. He closed his eyes and exhaled a deep breath.
“You’ll do great,” I said. “You’ll be the best damn High Warlock there ever was.”
He smiled down at me. “That’s because you’ll be by my side, and the little one.”
His hand touched the swell of my stomach. I intertwined my fingers with his. A few weeks after Victor had been executed, I’d discovered I was pregnant. Dominic had been elated and had proposed in that moment.
I didn’t know what the future held, and I didn’t plan on looking. In fact, I’d put away my crystal ball. I still kept Tyche around, for luck, but my fortune telling days were over. I would focus on now.
“I love you,” Dominic said.
“And I you. Whatever comes, I always will.” I pulled his mouth down to mine and kissed him. “Now let’s go claim our kingdom.”
Dominic took my hand, and together we walked through the door to our destiny.
