“Forgive me, I—” Brandon’s voice cut off as he pinned his gaze on Dee’s.
Meanwhile, the other man moved into view, and Dee gawked at a second beardless fellow, who was oddly dressed in a pair of long, dark breeches and a white shirt, with a length of red fabric hanging from his neck.
“Out, if you please. Now!” the man insisted.
Brandon grimaced in confusion, but Dee himself felt no such qualms.
“Thou shalt return to serve thy queen!” he repeated fervently, before the image of Jonathan Brandon faded away, soft and dreamlike, into the mists of time.

The Elizabethan time travel series had its first spark when we, Cary Morgan and Deborah O’Neill Cordes, met at a writers’ conference—twice. Amid a throng of several hundred participants, we bumped into each other at a coffee break and shared a moment, then went our separate ways. Later that day, we were serendipitously seated next to each other at the awards’ banquet. As our conversation renewed and deepened, we discovered a mutual love of London, Queen Elizabeth I, and time travel fiction. Joining forces, we sharpened our pens—and our wits—to begin a collaboration. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Several years ago, we decided to write our sequel to The Thornless Rose in a bold way, taking the daring path of having our heroine meet a terrible fate. But worry not! Because of the possibilities created by time travel, with its wonderful ability to foster twisty-turny plotting, we realized we could engineer a solution for a happily-ever-after ending, one that would wrap our series in a glow as warm as that cuppa Dr. Brandon so desperately desires.
It was a race against time (literally!) to see if our Travelers could save Anne. Sometimes, we got so involved it felt as if we were Watchers, too. Father Daniel’s reflection seems appropriate, “How incredible it was to possess the mental awareness of a time traveler, one who could straddle the ages, so to speak, and appreciate where—and when—he’d lived.” And how incredible that you, our readers, have the ability to journey with us through this and many other adventures.
What started as a chance encounter at a writers’ conference culminated in three very different series consisting of eight novels, giving our readers a plethora of new worlds to discover and enjoy.
