Circumstances Unraveled Page 13

by Jean Kelso

He turns to look at me, scrunching his eyebrows. “Excuse me? Reading about beavers and wood? Since when are you interested in our national animal?”

I laugh out loud, I can’t control it. I slap my thigh and shake my head. “Oh, my God. No. No, not that.”

He leans against the table and watches me intently. “Well, then—what the hell are you talking about?”

I take a deep breath and stop my laughing. I go and pick up my book from the table in the living room and bring it back to show him. The first thing he notices is the semi naked man on the cover. He raises his eyebrows and smirks. I ignore him and open the book flipping through until I find a spot that will explain what I mean and stick it in front of him. “Read this.”

He starts to read the paragraph. His expressions change as he reads. He immediately looks up at me, flabbergasted. “What the hell are you reading, woman?”

I try to take the book from him, but he doesn’t give it back. “Hey, I want to read some more.” I tell him tugging on the book lightly.

He tugs back and playfully growls. “I’m not done reading.” I laugh at him and yank the book from his grasp. “This guy’s cock has a nickname.” He chuckles then relents. “Fine, you can have it back. What would you like for dinner?” He asks as he turns and heads toward the fridge.

“No cooking tonight, baby. Pizza. I want pizza. And for dessert, I want you.”

It’s been a month since everything went down. Things are going great. I’m back to work and feeling good. Things with Jack and I have moved fast, but I suppose when you find your one true love you jump in with both feet. I’m moving all my stuff in this weekend. Well, what I need at least to be properly moved in. The rest is going into storage. People will say it’s too soon, but for me it’s just right.

Sebastian’s fast tracking for a Canadian Citizenship for Lilly and himself. I’m subletting my apartment to him for however long he wants to stay. So far he hasn’t been needed back in Washington, but knows the time will come. We’re here for him to watch Lilly when it does.

Gabe and Belle are back to normal. Belle and I are due for a girl’s night very soon. When she told me about her and Gabe’s play time, I grew intrigued and have been reading about some things. I might bring the topic up with Jack and see what he thinks. I’m sure he will be game, considering the comments made way back when we first met about control and such—and his reaction to my reading genres lately.

Dex hasn’t been around since the case ended, but then again I never met the man until shit hit the fan. He seems like a great guy and I hope to see him again. There are a few single nurses at work that’d love to get together with a handsome man like him.

I’m just leaving work. I’d told Jack I would pick up dinner on the way home tonight. He’s been working overtime on a missing child case and I don’t want him waiting hand and foot on me anymore. I stop and get an order of Chinese (some of our favorites so we have leftovers for tomorrow) and head home.

I pull in the driveway to see the lights are very dim in the house. This is unusual. I grab my purse and our dinner and head toward the door. I turn the knob and push. Once inside, I see the reason for low lighting. Candles burn on the counters and the tables. All the actual lights are off. I set my purse on the couch and bring the bag of food over to the table and set it down. “Jack?” I call out.

Jack comes walking down the hall wearing only a pair of blue jeans with rips in them, low on his waist. The button is undone. He’s topless and is barefoot. “How’s my firecracker?” He grins and mischief shines in his eyes.

I take my thin sweater off and set it on the chair. I start walking toward him. “I’m doing good. You hungry?” I ask him, smiling.

“Starving.” He says as he walks toward me.

“I have Chinese for us.” I look toward the table and back to him.

“I don’t want Chinese, baby.” His grin gets bigger if that is even possible.

  “Oh?”

“I want dessert. I want you.” He reaches me, leaning down, scooping me up over his shoulder. He slaps my ass making me laugh. Our sex life has been nothing but amazing. You’d think with having been raped that I’d be skittish, but Jack has helped erase the touch of those men. He has helped me move forward, forward and onward with a future with the man I love.

I smack his ass in return and then squeeze both cheeks. “So, greedy, baby.”

  “Only for you.”
