“STOP!” Donvin roared, turning on her with a fierceness that made her flinch back. He growled long and low, throwing his pants against the door so he could wipe both hands down his face. “I want to take care of you, Omega. I want to push your legs apart and fuck you until you scream my name, until the knot locks us together and I can fill you with my seed as you come over and over.”

Panting, Karissa nodded, shifting to her knees as she reached for him. “Yes, Donvin, please. I want that too, I need it.” She started to stand, the slick slipping down her thighs, but he suddenly growled louder and she froze. The look on his face was dangerous, an Alpha about to snap, and she knew it would hurt, but part of her craved it. Wanted to feel all of that strength driving his thick shaft inside her, wanted to feel his knot swell and send her into oblivion — but he tore his gaze away from her.

Muttering a curse, he paced back and forth, the growl an ever-present rumble that had her sitting back on her heels. Protector or not, she’d already pushed one Alpha over the edge today, and she wouldn’t survive another.

“Donvin?” she asked quietly, ready to beg for him to help her if she had to.

The Alpha stopped pacing, staring at the wall as the growl slowly faded. He stretched and then quickly hissed air through his teeth. With one large hand wrapped over the dark bruise on his ribs, Donvin turned back to her. “I know what you need, Karissa, and I want to tend you… by the gods I do… but I belong to this pack. I chose this pack, and I will not let it be ripped apart.”

  “But—”

“Not even for you, Omega.” He stepped back, putting more space between them as she stared at him in shock, waiting for him to change his mind — but he didn’t move.

Desperation turned to anger in a flash and Karissa opened her mouth to argue, to rage, but she couldn’t find the right words in the cluttered mess of her mind. The pack. The fucking pack. First Alishair, and now Donvin, talking about the other males like they were some kind of strange family. A family they had chosen, but she hadn’t. She’d never chosen, and she didn’t want them.

  She didn’t.

Her skin was covered in sweat, the aches returning to her body as he refused to touch her, which she shouldn’t be willing to beg for in the first place. Shouldn’t even want it. Fighting the urge to scream, she planted her hands on the floor, pleading with her body to let go of the need. To ignore the lingering taste of Donvin’s cum on her tongue and be normal again.

Just be normal again so they have no power over you. You don’t want them, you don’t want this, you don’t want any of them.

Ten males, that she knew of, and none of them really knew her. None of them really cared about her, couldn’t care as much as they imagined they did. They barely knew her. It was just biology, the same thing that drew her to them. They meant nothing to her.

Something about those last words felt like a lie, even said inside her own head, but she tried to believe it, wanted to believe it so hard that she felt tears burning in her eyes as something inside pushed back. A dull ache in her chest as Tinves’ sweet face appeared behind her eyes, then Zeke’s gentle smile. She remembered the way Halyrion would curl his warm bulk against her as they slept, and how Parel always found a way to be close enough to stroke her skin. And Donvin… he was always quiet, and he’d never spoken to her this much around the other Alphas, but she had always seen this. This steadfast commitment to the pack, his dedication to her. Never more clearly than when Mordek almost killed him as they’d fought, and would have succeeded if Jeden hadn’t protected his brother.

The tears rolled down her cheeks and she roughly swiped at them as she finally let herself think of Jeden… and Mordek. She could feel them. Distinct little thumps behind her ribs, both heavy, dull, filled with sorrow. One felt dark, almost black with the pain that thrummed from the other end of the bond, but it was weaker now than it had been before everything. Before they’d commanded her, before they’d tried to turn this thing on her and force her submission. Before she’d tried to run, before Mordek had gone feral and attacked his pack just to get to her.

  Mordek.

It was the act of thinking of him that brought his pain to the forefront. A black spot in her chest that marked their connection, throbbing with the beat of someone else’s pulse. With each heartbeat came a wave of sadness and soul-crushing grief that stole the air from her lungs, bringing real physical pain, and she pushed away from it before it sucked her in and took her down with it. Choking on the urge to cry, she felt something linger in the space where his sorrow had been. A strange new awareness that spread out and she could almost feel the dissonance in the air. The actions from that morning were rippling out through the pack, affecting everyone.

Alishair who had tried to be her friend, to help her understand what it meant to be Omega even though it obviously hurt him. Corist who had looked at her with so much regret. And Niken. Cringing, she touched her throat where she knew there was still a ring of bruises that matched his. The Beta who had suffered to protect her, to protect his pack. A pack that was going dark all around her, like someone was dimming the lights.

The pain in her chest wouldn’t go away, even as she rubbed over her sternum and tried to shut it all out. Raising her eyes to Donvin, she saw he was already watching her.

“This isn’t my fault,” she whispered, sniffling, and he sighed. Approaching slowly, he crouched a few feet in front of her, still gloriously naked and smelling like something delicious and tantalizing. Her body hummed with need even as she fought the urge to cry, just more proof that she was never changing back to who she was before. But all of the sadness in her chest, now that she’d recognized it, was too heavy to carry.

It was the pack. Suffering because she wasn’t there, which only made her chest hurt more because if she went back she would probably never get out of that room again.

“You’re right. This isn’t your fault.” Glancing across the tables filled with all of Alishair’s useless medicines, he shook his head. “None of this is your fault, but I can’t keep you separated from the pack. Even if it would be nice to have you in my arms, all to myself, for a night.”

The pain spread in her chest. “I can’t stay here forever, Donvin. It will kill me.”

Rubbing his face, he seemed to sag under the weight of her words. “I know that. We all know it, but it’s something we will have to figure out together. As a pack.” Moving forward, he stroked his thumb over her cheek. “We are stronger together. I swear.”

  “I don’t feel strong.”

“Really?” He grinned, a rough chuckle leaving his lips, and it transformed his face. For a moment Donvin wasn’t the dark, sullen, dangerous Alpha she’d come to know. He looked almost playful, like someone else — someone happy. “You’ve brought this entire pack to its knees, Karissa. Seven Alphas. I’d say that’s pretty damn strong.”

Looking down at the floor, Karissa swallowed hard, biting her lip when he tilted her chin up with a gentle touch, that smile still playing at his lips.

“We are yours,” he said, as if repeating those words could convince her she had any power here. “We would do anything for you.”

“But you won’t help me,” she whispered, already knowing the answer.

“I won’t fail my brothers, no matter how much I want you.” He stood slowly, moving to the wall by the door, like a wordless threat that he’d leave unless she made a choice.

Even as anger spiked inside, it was hard to look at him. So much raw, wild beauty that made her blood run hot despite the heavy weight in her chest. Her cunt squeezed around nothing, the dull cramp in her belly urging her to just give in, agree and let herself be taken care of — tended. Return to the nest, to the males whose dark emotions swirled through this strange place.

They wanted her. All of them, which might have been a fantasy if she had any choice in the matter. If her life wasn’t in ruins and she wasn’t their prisoner.

“You have to swear to me, Donvin. Swear to me that you wi
ll help me find a way out of here. I want to go outside, I want to go home.” Fighting the urge to cry, or scream, she saw the tahgrog out of the corner of her eye and upended it. Drinking way more than she knew she should, she reveled in the burn as she set it on her thigh, satisfied by the concern etched on Donvin’s face. “I want my fucking life back.”

  “Omega…”

“My name is Karissa, and you said you were mine. You’ve said it before.” Sitting tall, up on her knees, she felt the presence of the pack in the building. Their scents, their tastes flooding her mind as everything inside hummed, stretched, and then purred. “Did you lie to me?”

His lips pulled back from his teeth showing a flash of white in his beard, a throaty growl rumbling until it settled in his chest as he stalked close. “I don’t lie, Karissa.”

“Then swear it.” Something in her voice buzzed, like an extension of the purr, and Donvin took one more step before he dropped to a kneel only a few inches from her, their skin almost touching.

  “Karissa—”

“Swear it.” The words vibrated in her chest, something between a purr and a growl… something more. Donvin’s pupils dilated, and she felt heat flush her cheeks, slick dripping between her thighs as she eased them wider and he made a low sound in his chest.

“Okay. I swear. I swear that I will help you get your life back, and that I will protect you even until death. I will keep you safe, I will care for you and tend you.” Reaching forward, he cupped her cheek, the emotions flashing in his eyes too chaotic to decipher as he slid his hand behind her neck and pulled her towards him. “And I will worship your body as I fill you.”

The kiss blistered her lips, burned the powerful buzzing purr out of her veins with the sheer intensity of it, and Karissa climbed onto his lap as she tasted his lips, his tongue. Something about his words felt important, but she couldn’t focus as he lifted her.

He held her so easily as he stood, her legs wrapping around his waist where his cock was trapped between them. Pinned between her slick and his hard belly, and he groaned as he pressed her against the wall. Finally breaking the kiss, he nipped her chin, trailing down her jaw with licks and bites. “Let me take you to the nest, Karissa, and I will tend you. I’ll fuck you as hard as you can handle.”

The moan was unavoidable, impossible to resist as he rolled his hips, working his cock through her slick to tease her clit with each mimed thrust. “Donvin…”

“I will keep you safe, and I am not the only one who tried to protect you today.” Lifting her a little higher, he gave her access to his throat, and in a sinful tease she felt his cock brush the entrance to her cunt. Just as she whined, he pressed her harder against the wall. “Each and every one of them worships you, needs you.”

“What about Mordek?” she asked softly, still not sure what it would mean to face him again. A trickle of fear down her spine that Donvin’s next nip at her shoulder seemed to ease.

“He’s not good, in pain like the rest of us, but he knows he deserves it.” Leaning back, Donvin held her still so she couldn’t rock against him. “He didn’t just fail you and betray the bond, he failed his pack by putting you in jeopardy. How he’s going to deal with that… I don’t know. But this is your choice, Karissa, I won’t drag you back in there.”

It was his last words that finally broke her.

The need had been a constant thrum between her thighs, and he amplified it with every teasing stroke of his thick cock, refusing to fuck her until she agreed. Worse, that heavy sadness in her chest haunted her with the suffering of the pack — their shared pain — and those two dark spots behind her ribs pulsed with guilt, calling out to her. All of them calling out to her. All of that could have made her agree, would have probably worn her down eventually, because Donvin had already proved he could walk away from her. Would walk away from her so he wouldn’t betray the others… but he wouldn’t betray her either. Wouldn’t force her to return to them even to save the pack.

It was the first time any of them had given her a real choice, and she knew what she wanted. Needed.

Wrapping her hands behind his head, she pulled his lips to hers, pouring everything she couldn’t put into words into the tangle of lips and tongues as he moaned against her. His beard was rough, but it only made the kiss more intense. A flood of warmth in her chest pushed all of the pain away, the darkness edging back, until there was only the heat of his skin, the scent of him wrapping around every sense. “Okay,” she said, nipping his lip as he moved to continue the kiss. “We can go back.”

“Thank the gods,” he growled, and caught her lips in a kiss again. Delirious as his purr became bone melting, vibrating straight through her chest and into the wall behind her, he lifted her ass to line up. She was prepared for another tease, but then he slammed his cock inside with a rough thrust.

“Fuck!” she screamed, unable to bite back the whine as she felt every inch stretch her. Still bruised, sore, she caught a fistful of his hair and growled.

When he leaned back enough to meet her eyes, that grin was back on his lips. Devilish, fucking proud, like he knew exactly what he’d done. “I told you I don’t lie, Karissa. I’m going to fuck you until you scream my name.”

  Chapter Nine

  Donvin

She had a fierce hold in his hair, the pinpricks of pain sliding down his spine as he slammed into her again, working his shaft a little deeper with each kick of his hips. He’d known it would hurt, had tried to open her up, to get her cunt ready, but she was still sore, whimpering.

Groaning, he adjusted his hold and thrust again, gaining another inch, reveling in the squeak she made just before she sought his lips for another kiss. Karissa tasted like sunlight, warm and vibrant, and sweet… like a fruit he couldn’t quite remember. Intoxicating.

Donvin tried to temper his strength, to remember she was still recovering, but he liked the way the wall made every thrust count. No give, no softness.

  Fuck. The nest.

It took way too much focus to pull away from her mouth, to ignore the pounding ache in his cock long enough to gain some level of control. He’d almost lost it too many times, almost given in, and now she’d finally agreed to return to the pack — and he was almost balls deep, about to knot her and ruin all of his careful efforts.

But there was no way he was leaving the tight squeeze of her cunt.

“Fuck it.” He growled and wrapped an arm behind her back, put a hand under her ass, and pulled away from the wall.

“Don’t stop again, please?” Even as she begged, her voice still had a bite to it that made him want her even more. The little Omega had teeth, a dangerous amount of bravery inside her small body, and he liked it. He needed to show her just what she meant to him. “Donvin, please.”

Hiding his grin in her violet hair, he amped up the purr as he moved forward and ripped open Alishair’s door. “Couldn’t if I wanted to. I’m getting you to the nest so I can take you the right way.”

“What?” she asked, and he had to blink to see straight. To keep his feet moving as her legs gripped him and her body clamped down around his shaft.

What the fuck had he just said?

Karissa had no idea what he’d meant by it, but he did. He remembered when doing things the right way used to matter, when the idea of taking an Omega on her knees in an alley wouldn’t have seemed possible to him. He would have been one of the males killing the bastard that had hurt a female like that.

But that was twelve years, one mate, and one son ago.

The shit he’d done since he’d lost Nandestra and Borvir had changed him. The things the pack had to do to survive had twisted him, but this female? This pale Coluurian female, was making him remember how things should be. He’d already said the mating promise to her, twice, and now he was talking about taking her the right way. In a nest, face to face, where he could kiss her and see the pleasure he gave her. Worship her, like all Omegas deserved.

“I need more,” she whined, her hips rocking a
s she rode him the little she could, cunt squeezing his cock so hard that he almost reached out to hold onto the wall.

“You’re gonna have to wait until I get you on your back.” Nipping her shoulder, he groaned as she clamped down on him again, but her tight sheath was only the second most challenging thing in that moment. Walking past the pack while fucking their Omega, when none of the others had even touched her since they’d laid her down in Alishair’s room, was going to be a whole new test on their bonds with each other. Dangerous.

Still, it was the only option, the only way. Shifting his grip, he put his hand on the door and tried to breathe, getting a mouthful of her scent that only made the ache in his balls worse.

“Hold onto me,” he whispered against her hair, and couldn’t deny just how incredible it felt to have her arms wrapped around his neck, pressed so firmly against him. Completely willing, craving him — and she’d asked for him by name. Trusted him to help her.

Jaw tight, Donvin swallowed the odd swell in his chest and pulled the door open too hard. It slammed into the wall, and she jerked against him just before he brought his arm behind her back again. Reassuring her and keeping her close. The room was completely silent, every one of his brothers standing, watching. Jeden was the first to take a step towards him, and Donvin bounced her on his cock just to make her moan. That sweet sound had them all shifting as he ignored their second’s attention and walked directly to the nest.

Scanning it, he found the space he normally slept on and moved there. Not in the center where all of their scents blurred. He had taken care of her, brought her back to the pack, returned her to the nest so that the others might see her — but now she was his.

He shifted to his knees slowly, rocking her on his hips just enough to tease, to bring back the bite in her voice, and her fist tightened in his hair sharply enough to make him flinch. “You said you wouldn’t stop,” she growled, teeth bared, pupils taking over the lavender in her eyes.
