Alpha's Bond: A Reverse Harem Omegaverse Story (The Clarity Series Book 3)

“What have we done that hasn’t upset her?” Jeden asked, a rare smile flashing his white teeth as he stood. “Come on, Alpha.”
Taking his second’s hand, he let the male haul him to his feet, needing the help more than he’d ever admit aloud. “They won’t listen to me. You know that, right?”
“I think you underestimate your pack.”
Not mine. Mordek didn’t say it aloud, he just followed Jeden in silence, stopping at the far edge of the nest when all of the males turned to look at him. When they didn’t continue arguing, he ran a hand over his hair. “Someone speak.”
“Donvin promised her she could leave,” Halyrion said, almost growling out the words until the little Omega stirred and he shifted into a purr instantly.
“She can’t leave. That other pack will find her, and…” Zeke trailed off, but Parel picked it up.
“Niken’s suffering is proof of the danger. She’s seen it. Alishair even said she recognized what had happened to him, and he explained to her what it means to be an Omega.” Parel wouldn’t take his eyes off her as he spoke softly. “We could use that to make her do things on our terms.”
“On our terms… meaning we let her just walk out into New Paraja smelling like that and just hope she gives us a call?” Zeke rolled his eyes. “That won’t work.”
“We can’t keep her like some prisoner,” Tinves said, his voice tight. “That’s what she thinks this is, and she’s right. We think we’re protecting her, but we’re—”
“Keeping her alive,” Halyrion hissed, cutting off the male as Tinves shook his head.
“We’re going to lose her,” Donvin whispered. His mouth was bloody too, but the bite on the Omega’s shoulder was delicately done, however Donvin’s shoulder looked like she may have tried to take a piece out of him. An irritating pang of want hit Mordek in the chest, but he swallowed it down with everything else and nodded at the male to continue. “Of anyone here, I know the risks to her as an Omega. I know what can happen.”
The way the male’s gaze settled on Mordek made his bones cold, but he didn’t flinch away. He deserved the judgment, the low burn of anger in his eyes.
“We have all sworn that we will never let another Omega be lost if it’s within our power. Never again. That is what built this pack, it is what made us brothers.” Swallowing, Donvin looked down at the small female cradled against his chest. “But we will lose her if we don’t find a way to give this Omega her life back.”
Halyrion groaned. “Ridiculous. Alishair is happy here! He’s safe, cared for—”
“Don’t pretend to speak for Alishair,” Parel snapped, teeth bared, and the two males faced each other, the aggression building until Mordek growled.
It was instinct, using his position to stop the violence before it even happened, but he hadn’t expected them to ease back and look at him like they expected him to speak.
“Alishair’s situation is different, and you all know it.” Donvin filled in the silence for him, but the male didn’t look at him, he was purring into the Omega’s ear, caressing her back.
“That’s true, we’re not discussing Alishair. Karissa is our concern right now and we need to look at our options. I know we all want to keep her safe”—Jeden paused, looking at Mordek as if to include him—“and it would be easiest to keep her safe here, but a broken Omega isn’t something any of us want.”
“We could keep her safe wherever she wants to be,” Tinves added. “This is our home, not hers, and it isn’t like we haven’t moved before.”
“Right, and we did a great job keeping Niken safe.” Zeke’s cheeks were flushed, his anger as easy to read as every other emotion the young Alpha felt. “It’s not like the other pack is going to stop hunting for her. She’s the only female Omega that we know of on the whole planet! I mean, fuck, if the roles had been reversed, we would still be walking the streets trying to catch a whiff of her scent.”
“Finally the kid says something intelligent,” Halyrion grumbled.
“Maybe she’ll—” Parel started to speak just as Jeden said, “It’s about identifying risks.”
“We’ll do it,” Mordek said, half to himself as he stared at the floor.
“What?” Tinves asked, looking straight at Mordek as he elbowed Zeke to get him to stop muttering.
Gradually, each of them turned their eyes on him and he felt the weight of their attention. It was hard to bear, something he didn’t want to carry at the moment when he had no respect for himself — but this was important. “We’ll do it,” he repeated, louder. “We will find a way to give Karissa her life back, to make this work and keep her safe. Whatever it takes.”
“And what if—”
“Do you mean that?” A soft voice silenced Halyrion’s argument before it had even begun, and the pack turned to the small female still filled with Donvin’s knot.
Mordek took a deep breath, letting the pain in his ribs stab through him before he raised his eyes to find Karissa staring straight at him. Dried blood on her lips, her chin, smears of it on her chest and breasts, she looked like a warrior. And she was, because the battle she’d survived was him. Still, she was fucking beautiful. The haze still had her pupils too large, but there was a pale, lavender ring to mark her awareness.
No right to look at her.
Clenching his jaw, he nodded and then dropped his gaze, not ready to feel the hate he deserved. Not yet, not directly from her lips. Later she could use those teeth to rip his throat open and he’d let her do it. Instinct or not, he’d damaged the mating bond. Failed her.
“Say it.” Her voice hummed, and somewhere in his chest he felt a distinct tug, like the bond wanted to remind him it still existed. To mock him.
“Whatever it takes, we will figure out how to keep you safe and have your life back.” Shifting down to one knee, he ignored the pain and met her eyes, his fist landing over his chest where he could almost feel her. “On my life, I swear it.”
Jeden went down to one knee beside him, his fist over his chest. “I swear it.”
One by one the other Alphas in the pack swore, until there was only Halyrion left. Arms crossed where he sat near her, his eyes were narrowed on Mordek. A stubborn silence filling the space between them, but on this Mordek refused to back down. If the male wanted to challenge him, he could do it in a week when they were both healed. But not now, and not on this.
Growling, Halyrion broke their stare. But the male took a slow breath before he finally looked at Karissa and nodded. “On my life, little Omega. I swear it.”
Life oaths all around. Fuck.
Not like it mattered. If they failed her, if they got her killed, none of them would want to live anyway. Sighing, Mordek clenched his fist tight. They would have to hunt down the other pack now, sooner rather than later. Not just for what they’d done to Niken, but Zeke had spoken the truth. Those males would never stop looking for the scent they’d found. They’d hunt for it until they found her — so they’d have to find the pack first.
Find them and kill them.
