The game had two minutes left, and Kevin’s team was down by three points. They were too far away for a field goal and there were only seven seconds left in the game. Matt was chewing on his fingernail, and Wes was tapping his foot so hard the bleachers were vibrating.

The huddle on the field broke, and Matt heard Kevin call out the play. The clock started, and Kevin snatched the ball and fell back, looking for an opening. The running back got tackled midfield, and the opposing team was closing in on him. Kevin looked left then right. He tucked the ball under his arm and took off running. Kevin dodged the blocks and picked up speed. He was almost to the end zone when a cornerback jumped in his path. Kevin shuffled to the side, and the cornerback fell while reaching for him. Kevin leaped over the downed player and took the five steps needed to make the touchdown.

Wes and Matt were on their feet, screaming and clapping. The crowd erupted in cheers, and all the players ran out onto the field. Matt looked over the heads of the people standing to look for Kevin. Kevin must have felt his stare and turned to look at him. Matt gave him a thumbs-up, and Kevin nodded, a huge smile on his youthful face.

“Yeah,” Matt whispered. “We’re going to be all right.” Matt put his arm around Wes and kissed him on the head. “Have I told you today how happy I am and how much I love you?”

“I’m pretty sure you have.” Wes wrapped his arms around Matt’s waist. “But you can always tell me again.”

“I love you, Wes.” Matt raised his right hand to touch Wes’s cheek. “To the moon and back.”

“To the moon and back.” Wes grinned and reached up to press a quick kiss to Matt’s lips.

The sounds of the crowd faded away as Matt stared into Wes’s eyes. For everything that Matt had lost it was hard for him to be angry. He had Wes and Kevin, and that was enough. Life wasn’t supposed to be easy. Challenges are what make people stronger, and as a family, they grew stronger every day. Preparing for the day when the darkness would return but until then Matt was satisfied with living in the light with Wes.
