“But you have to go back if you want to go to college,” he reminded me. “If you want to get into design school, or study business. I don’t know how to manage finances. You’re going to have to do all of the accounting for our design studio.”
I threw my arms around him and he held me close.
“You have to go, Gigi, and do this. And when you’re done, you’ll know with certainty if you want to get married and make all of these dreams come true. If I’m what you want, I’ll always be here.”
I boarded the train with my rolling suitcase, and couldn’t help but remember how nervous I had been just five months earlier when I had ridden into the city with Aaron. I had been so certain that night that God had turned his back on us, deserted us, left us to fend for ourselves. It had seemed like the world was ending, but a whole new world was opening itself to us. One that I never would have known existed if I had hung up on my brother the night he had called me and left him to fend for himself.
On my ride back to Treadwell, I could see clearly how God had continuously pointed me in the right direction and had waited for me to make the right choices. Maybe Daddy hadn’t been wrong about everything. I had been thinking about calling a truce with God. My gold cross was back around my neck, underneath my Dirtbike Jane t-shirt.
Hey God, I thought, settling into my seat, watching the skyscrapers of Manhattan shrink through my window. I’ve missed you.
