“You and me both, I hope,” said Zeitman.

Maguire was quiet for a moment. “Not me, Robert. I’m too old. The Pianhmar will patch you up as good as new, but for my part, it’s time I acknowledged the fact that I’m long past my second childhood.”

He was gone, then, and Zeitman was alone. He watched the Pianhmar and the Pianhmar watched him, and after a while he realized that he was no longer afraid.

Robert P. Holdstock was born on the Romney Marsh, surrounded by gorse, pebbles, and the remnants of the earlier Roman occupation. He grew up with an instinct for desolation and timelessness that he believes was crucial to his development of a love for science fiction. Having been a construction worker, banana boatman, slate miner in Wales, and young scientist, he gave it all up as soon as he sold his first book. He lives with his wife, Sheila, and their black cat, Finnegan, in Hertfordshire, England, and admits to going through life in “a state of almost mindless cheerfulness.”
