Maritime Tradition in Wexford Street Names

Antelope Road: named to commemorate ships of the same name.

Bayview Drive: modern estate reflecting the scene visible from there.

Common Quay Street: possibly the location for the general landing of cargo in the days of private quays.

Coolcotts: an interesting derivation is suggested as Coill Cots or wood of the cots, perhaps where timber for boats grew.

Crescent Quay: from the shape of the Deep Pool.

Custom House Quay: from one of the locations of the Custom House.

Devereux Villas: from the Devereux family of merchants and shipowners.

Dolphin Road: another popular ship name, also the sea creature.

Edenvale Avenue: a ship of Wexford Port.

Ferryboat Lane: an old name for Monck Steeet, from wher the ferryboat to Ferrybank departed.

Fishers Row: probably from the occupation of the residents.

Gaffneys Lane: old title of Charlotte St., after the Gaffneys, shipowners.

Gulbar Road: from a sand bar, The Gull Bar, in Wexford Harbour.

Hantoon Road: this street is named after both the ship and in turn, a wave system in the harbour.

Menapia Avenue: from the ship Menapia and the old name for Wexford.

Oyster Lane: from the famous oyster taverns of a century ago.

Redmond Road: after the Redmond family, involved in politics, business, shipbuilding and land reclamation.

Saltee Avenue: another ship of the port, also islands off the south coast.

  Seaview Avenue: from the view.

Slaney Street: before reclamation in the 1800s, the river lapped this road.

Trimmers Lane: a trimmer or trummer stowed cargo or ballast to keep a ship on an even keel.

  Tuskar View: descriptive.

From this list, one can see the importance of the port and its ships to Wexford over the years.
