Faith's Sheriff (Montgomery Family and Friends) Page 12

by Iris Abbott

Cole had gotten down on bended knee last week and proposed to Faith. She’d accepted of course with stars in her eyes and Cole promptly put his house on the market. He and Faith were looking at houses not too far from where both Caroline and Abigail lived on the opposite side of the lake from the fishing cabin. They would need a larger house when they started living together and both of them were more than ready to leave the neighborhood they were living in far behind. The memory of Richard Tome and his heinous acts still cast a shadow on the neighborhood for both Faith and Cole.

Investigators had found evidence of Richard Tome’s financial difficulties and pending bankruptcy. Confronted with solid proof of his crimes and maybe even shame for just how far he’d fallen, the man had pleaded guilty in a court of law. He’d killed his wife for life insurance money and shot his sister-in-law to make it look like a random robbery gone wrong.

Things had just spiraled out of control from there. He’d seen Faith and Cole with Jasmine and knew his alibi had been blown. He blamed Faith and set out to get rid of her. He’d tried driving her out of town and when that failed he’d tried to eliminate her. His failures begin to stack up along with the fear of getting caught and in a last desperate attempt to cover his tracks he’d set fire to the Montgomery house to distract the sheriff while he gunned for Faith.

Faith shuddered at just how close Tome had come to getting away with his evil plan.

There was good news though. The Owens family was in the process of officially adopting Jasmine. Even though her parents were gone she still had a family that loved her and wanted to take care of her. The life insurance money had been put in a trust for Jasmine. She’d have access to the money when she turned eighteen. It wouldn’t ease Jasmine’s pain, but it might ease her way in life somewhat.

Faith had been spared the horrors of a trial too. She was grateful for that. The whole horrible ordeal was over and done with and she was living her life to the fullest with Cole at her side.

Cole looked over at Faith and could see that she was deep in thought. He reached for her hand and clasped it within his own. Then he brought her hand to his lips and gently kissed it. “What are you thinking? You have that look about you, a glow of pure joy.” It was the look that made her the most beautiful woman in the world to Cole.

Faith flashed him a radiant smile. “I was thinking about us and all our friends. How lucky I am to have them in my life and of course how lucky I am to have such a sexy sheriff at my beck and call.”

“Hmm, Faith’s sheriff. It has a nice ring to it. I love the sound of that almost as much as I love you.”
