Movement across the street caught my eye and I watched a man walk out of the shadows. He stopped beneath the street lamp and pushed the fedora back on his head, letting the light touch his face.
It was Voice.
He crossed the empty street and accepted the offered cigarette and light. We stared at each other, the smoke bridging the gap between us better than any words either of us could say.
We turned and trudged silently up the street toward the noise and the lights of the city.
Our City.

Kirk Dougal has had fiction works appear in multiple anthologies and released his debut novel and the first book in the Fallen Angels trilogy, DREAMS OF IVORY AND GOLD, in May of 2014 through Angelic Knight Press. The second novel is scheduled to publish in the fall of 2017 and the concluding chapter will be seen in 2018. In addition, his YA dystopian novel, JACKED, led the launch of Ragnarok Publications' Per Aspera SF imprint in 2016. He is also beginning his new series, The Dowland Cases, with RESET in May of 2017 and will follow with the second novel, QUEST CALL, in late 2017.
Kirk is currently working in a corporate position with a group of newspapers after serving as a group publisher and editor-in-chief. He lives in Ohio with his wife and four children.
