Besides, Dara and Siv had been too busy restoring Vertigon and preparing for their wedding to allow Lima’s bitterness to touch them.

On a beautiful day at summer’s end, they had danced across the Great Hall—still under construction—with their friends looking on, and banished the memories of their struggles for good. Siv had waltzed with the dignity of a king and kissed her with the passion of a prince, and Dara had worn flowers and Firegold in her hair.

But it was as Dara and Siv advanced and retreated across the polished stone dueling floor, perfectly in sync, their boots tapping out a new song, that Dara’s happiness was complete. She had accepted that she was like her parents in many ways, but she made her own choices. She had her own Work and her own strengths quite apart from theirs. Her wounds would heal, and with time, she would be whole once more.

  Acknowledgments

Writing this series has been an epic adventure over the past two years. Thank you for following along with Dara, Siv, and the others. I hope you’ve had as much fun with them as I have! Thank you so much for the emails, reviews, and messages. I love you all!

As always, a few people have been vital to the completion of this book. My parents, Ayden and Julie Young, offer constant encouragement and constructive feedback. My husband lets me bounce ideas off him on a regular basis—plus he’s good company.

I’m lucky to have found a wonderful group of professionals to help turn these stories into books. Working with Susie and Lynn at Red Adept Editing has been a dream. I’m still obsessed with my covers from Kitten, Kim, and Darja at Deranged Doctor Design. Caitlin Kelly is doing a wonderful job narrating the audiobook editions of these novels, and I appreciate my agent, Sarah Hershman, and the team at Tantor Media for getting the audio ball rolling.

My writing groups in Hong Kong and online have become utterly essential. They make my writing life anything but lonely, and I’m so thankful I found them. I’m especially grateful to Laura Besley for the feedback on this book and to Willow Hewitt for all the Fridays.

This won’t be the last you’ll see of our friends from Vertigon. I have tentative plans for a spinoff set five years after the events of Night of Flame. In the meantime, I’m working on a new fantasy trilogy set in a different world. If you enjoyed Steel and Fire, you’ll definitely like it! Join my mailing list at JordanRivet.com to be the first to hear about those books.

  Thank you for reading!
