by Alone Eagle
In his eyes, I had done well.
I had brought in the most powerful man in the city.
The captive captured her captor.
It was unheard of.
You betrayed me, Dahlia.
Those words had haunted me every hour, every day for the past month.
I don’t want you to be caught up in the war. I want you alive.
Vlad had never wanted me broken, but now I was breaking apart inside a little more every day.
Miran exhaled slowly. “That’s the one weakness, but you’re stronger than the rest. You have been through too much shit already. You’re tough skinned. You can handle this. You even have a reason greater than me for removing crime. I know, it’s hard moving on from Vlad’s cruelty. I don’t know what happened to you when you lived with him. I’ve no idea at all. You haven’t talked to me about what’s going on in your mind. All you talked about is work. You’ve been shutting me out since you got back. I’m sorry if he hurt you.”
No, I hurt him.
I stared at Miran with dimmed eyes now. He looked at me, searching my face for something. Likely a sign or signal that I was okay, but I only gave him a weary smile.
“I’m doing okay.”
I’d lied to him for the first time in my life.
You okay?
I couldn’t forget this new voice in my head now.
It had replaced the other one from my childhood.
“While you were gone, I did some more research. I finally found some kind of link. I found a Lebanese family that gave birth to a girl twenty-six years ago.”
My eyes shot up in confusion and disbelief.
Was he saying…?
“I believe we may have found your family, Dahlia.”
My breath caught in my chest. My eyes widened at the thought of meeting them. A dead end that gave me hope again. I had given up years ago, yet Miran had never stopped searching. It was likely far too late though. Those people had abandoned me, left me to a foster care system where I’d had to fend for myself, losing myself repeatedly.
I stared at him and gave him a choked reply, “You’re the only family I have.”
Miran’s eyes softened. “Do this. Meet these folks first. It might help to bring… closure. You deserve it more than anyone I know. You’re the strongest person I know, kid.”
My lips turned up in a smile, and I knew it reached my eyes too. I beamed at the familiar nickname Miran had given me since he’d met me.
“Who is my new assignment?”
Miran was quiet for a second before he spoke.
“Bring in Salvi Moretti.”
The moment the devil saw me at the auction, he couldn't look away.

In all my books, I like to raise awareness on difficult yet important subjects. In the U.S alone, there are 424,000 children in the foster care system, the average age being six. 26% children have reported abuse and perhaps an even larger number haven’t. Rape is still the world’s top underreported crime.
