“I thought you’d prefer a big sniper rifle to another AR,” Zane shrugged.

“Thank you, man,” Mack said softly. “This is really awesome.”

The next item was a .45 caliber Kriss Vector in olive drab. At first Mack thought it was the civilian SBR or “short barrel rifle” version, but he quickly realized that this was actually the selective fire submachine gun version.

“I even included the kits to swap between all four calibers it’s available in,” Zane explained, “but I only included .45 ammo with it.”

“That’s okay,” Mack chuckled. “I kinda love it.”

The final weapon in the bag was a Rock Island Armory Rock Ultra CS-L compact 1911-style pistol. “I know a Glock would have made more sense because the Vector uses Glock magazines, but I thought you’d like something more classic for a back-up or concealed carry piece.”

“And there’s enough of your Program KO ammo to fight a lot of battles with,” Mack laughed. “Thank you, both, very much.”

“It’s like redneck Christmas in here. Okay, you two, you should go find your friends. I don’t have any presents for them.”

“That’s alright, we can share this with them,” KC chuckled.

THEY FOUND LIAM AND Pilar hanging out with some of the Program agents who’d come to their rescue, and to Mack’s pleasant surprise they were all old comrades from his time in the service.

“Did the Lady Killer try to recruit you?” a grizzled old sergeant asked.

  “No.”

“Give it time. If not him, another one of the high ups will come along with an offer, and I recommend you give serious consideration to it,” the sergeant suggested.

“I like the way things are now,” Mack replied.

“Just ‘cause you go to work for the Program don’t mean you gotta change the way you’re fightin’ the Good Fight, kiddo,” the sarge chuckled.

Mack made his good-byes to his old comrades, and he and KC pulled Pilar and Liam to one side.

“I’m moving in with Liam,” Pilar announced bluntly.

  “Um, why?” Mack asked.

“Two reasons. First, instead of a workbench or a couch that converts into a bed, he has an actual queen-size bed in his camper. Second, he’ll be sharing that bed with me,” Pilar said.

“So, does this mean Liam’s your boyfriend now?” KC teased.

“Like you didn’t plan it that way,” Pilar rolled her eyes but then hugged KC tightly.

“I didn’t plan it that way at all,” KC admitted, “but I like how it turned out.”

“Time’s come for KC and I to move on,” Mack said.

  “Where to?” Liam asked.

“Don’t know yet, and it won’t be right now. We’ve gotta salvage what we can from Little Boy Blue, make some good-byes, wait for the drive to be cleared enough to drive out, but we’ll be leaving sooner rather than later.”

  “Mind if we tag along?”

Mack considered his friend for a moment. “You know, you might be handy to have around. How ‘bout the two of you consider coming to work for, or rather, with us? What do you think, partner?”

KC nodded. “That’s a great idea. We couldn’t have handled this without your help, you guys.”

“Even with Mack turning into a super werewolf?” Liam chuckled.

“About that, why didn’t you tell me I was a Nephilim?”

“I thought you knew! I mean, it’s kinda obvious to anybody who’s paying attention, even without my special abilities. I mean, you tap into your Grace all the time, bro!”

Mack considered Liam’s point. “Now, I gotta take you along so you and KC can research this and help me understand what I am.”

“We’re family, man,” Liam said. He grabbed Pilar’s hand, lifted it to his mouth and kissed it. “And I think we’re a great family, too.”

“So, what do we do first? Once we’re gone?” Pilar asked.

“I am going to a salon,” KC declared. “I think I want to be blonde for a while.”

“Really?” Liam teased. “Aren’t you two already Aryan poster children enough?”

“Don’t make me regret hiring you,” Mack growled, but he managed to make the threat sound happy.

  About the Author

The author lives in the not-at-all-made-up town of Covington, GA, which is the stand-in for the entirely-made-up-by-somebody-else towns of Mystic Falls, Sparta, Mississippi, and Hazzard County. He has never seen a vampire, much less the ones that keep diaries, or met Officer Bubba or them Duke Boys. Instead he prefers to live in worlds of his own creation where his companions include dragons, wizards, alien cyborgs, space battleships, and snarky heroes. His main hobby is writing third person biographies about himself born of vanity, personal insecurities, and a twisted sense of humor that has led more than one person to remark to him, "Boy, you ain't right."
