Jennifer laughed. “If we do, I’m getting mine surgically removed.” They turned and looked at each other and Jennifer looked at Reese’s mouth. Her body moved closer and then she gently kissed Reese’s lips.
Reese pulled Jennifer to her and brought their lips back together. Her tongue sought entry to Jennifer’s mouth. Their tongues did a dance in remembrance of days past. Reese broke away breathless. “I’ve wanted to do that for days now.”
Jennifer sat back against the couch cushion. “You’ve been waiting for me to make the first move.”
Reese turned Jennifer’s face to her. “Yes, but when you gave me permission to tell Elise that we were together,” she sighed, “I didn’t need you to make the first move.” She brought her lips back to Jennifer’s for a light kiss, and then whispered in her ear, “Take me to bed, Jen.”
Jennifer wanted to ask if she was sure but Reese’s eyes showed words were unnecessary. She grabbed her hand and led them to the bedroom. Jennifer reached for the buttons on Reese’s blouse, but her hands were stopped. “We don’t have to do anything, Reese,” Jennifer said, reaching for her chin.
“I want to. It’s just that I don’t…” Reese looked away.
“You don’t what?” Jennifer asked, turning her head so she could see Reese’s eyes.
“You’ve been with a lot of women, and I don’t want to disappoint you.” Reese couldn’t hide her tears.”
“Look at me,” Jennifer said, wiping a tear from Reese’s cheek. “No woman has ever held my heart as you did. Not one. There is no way you can disappoint me.” Jennifer smiled. “Why don’t you just lie down and let me hold you.” Reese nodded.
They lay on the bed and Jennifer opened her arm for Reese to lie against her neck. As Reese lay in the crook of her arm, Jennifer put her arm around her. Jennifer kissed Reese’s forehead and rubbed her back.
The car pulled into the driveway and Carol Caldwell took notice of the dark house next door. “I think we can lock the back door tonight.” Richard looked at his wife as he turned off the car. “I believe our daughter and Jennifer are getting reacquainted tonight.”
Richard stepped out of the car and stood next to his wife. “Well, it’s been a long time since we’ve had the house to ourselves.” He squeezed Carol’s shoulder. “Why don’t we get reacquainted too?”
“I’ve missed you so much, Jen. You can’t imagine the ache I’ve had in my heart for so long.” Reese was beginning to relax and her lips found Jennifer’s neck. “I want you so much, Jen.”
Jennifer rolled Reese out of her arms. She looked at Reese’s face and asked, “Are you sure?”
“I have never been so sure about anything.”
Jennifer reached for the buttons on her shirt as her lips came down on her body. She reached behind Reese’s back and released the clasp on her bra. Her lips never left Reese’s body in her exploration. Soft fingers found an already erect nipple and her mouth hungered to replace her hand. As her mouth came down on her nipple, a moan left Reese’s mouth.
“Oh, Jen,” she said in breathless anticipation.
Jennifer’s hand moved slowly down Reese’s stomach and down her leg, touching the hem of her shorts. Reese’s moaning continued as Jennifer’s hand found the heat between her legs.
“Please, Jen,” Reese begged.
Jennifer released the confining clothes off Reese’s body, and slowly slid her hand up her leg. Before she touched Reese again, she removed her own clothes, and her body came in full contact with her finally. Reese opened her legs allowing Jennifer’s heat to meet her own. Their lips were once again caught in the dance, as hands were everywhere.
“Please, Jen. Don’t make me beg,” Reese said against Jennifer’s lips.
“Never, sweetheart,” Jennifer said, as she began light kisses down her body.
“Jen, please I need to touch you,” Reese begged, to Jennifer’s surprise.
Jennifer found herself on her back and Reese in complete control of her body. The heat, not the fire, almost consumed her as the first wave of her orgasm hit. Her scream shattered the quiet of the house. Panting, she pulled Reese up to her waiting mouth. As she released her, she looked at Reese’s face. “No woman has ever brought me to that height before.” She smiled. “Where did that shy girl go who was afraid of disappointing me?”
Reese laughed softly. “She left the moment I touched you. The girl who replaced her knew just what to do because she was in the arms of the woman she had needed and loved all these years.”
They made love many times that night and into the early morning. They awoke late morning tangled in each other’s arms. Jennifer woke to the soft kisses being placed on her shoulder and neck.
“Good morning,” Jennifer said, rolling onto her side. “Did you sleep well?”
“Good morning to you, and I slept like the dead.” Reese buried her head in shyness. “I think we wore each other out.”
Jennifer kissed Reese’s forehead. “I see the shy girl has returned.” She reached for her hand and said, “Let’s take a shower so we can get something to eat and rehydrate.”
Reese followed Jennifer into the shower and her hand immediately went to Jennifer’s breast.
“The shy girl has left us again,” Jennifer said, putting her hand on top of the one holding her breast.
They quickly showered and brushed their teeth, when they could pull themselves away from each other. Reese brushed her hair, watching Jennifer in the mirror.
“What are you thinking?” Jennifer asked with a grin.
“Do I look as different as you do?” Reese asked shyly.
Jennifer leaned into the mirror smiling. “I don’t look different.”
Reese reached for Jennifer’s chin. “Look at that smile. There’s no doubt that you look different than you did yesterday. I know my smile won’t fade for a long time.”
“I don’t want my smile to ever fade,” Jennifer said, taking her hand as she led them down the steps. “Let’s see if I’ve got something in here to make for us.” Jennifer turned as Reese’s cell phone rang.
“It’s my mother.” Reese said, staring at the phone. “She must have those binoculars out again. Hi, Mom,” she said, answering the call. “Let me ask Jen.”
Jennifer turned from looking at the nearly empty refrigerator. “Ask me what?”
“My mother has roast beef sandwiches over there if you’re interested?” Reese asked, laughing.
“Since I need to go grocery shopping, I think that is a wonderful idea,” she said, already closing the refrigerator door.
“See you in a minute, Mom,” Reese said, ending the call. As they walked toward the back door, she paused. “She’s going to know what we did.”
Jennifer’s eyebrow rose.
“Are you okay with facing her so soon?” Reese asked as she took Jennifer’s hand.
“I don’t have a problem, if you don’t.”
Carol met them at the back door. “Good afternoon girls,” she called as the screen door opened.
“Morning,” they said in unison.
The two girls sat down as Carol placed their plate of sandwiches on the table. Hot coffee and potato salad were added to the table.
“Thank you so much for making us lunch. My refrigerator is in need of a healthy dose of groceries,” Jennifer said, taking a bite of her sandwich.
“Thought you girls might be hungry,” Carol said with a wink in Reese’s direction.
“Mom, please don’t go there. I am not going to discuss this with you,” Reese said firmly.
“I’ll tell you whatever you want to know, Carol,” Jennifer said chuckling. “Keep feeding me this way and I’ll tell you anything.”
Reese reached over and hit Jennifer playfully. “No, you won’t.”
Jennifer watched her and saw the shy girl already in place. “I’m only teasing you, Reese. “Your mom would have to torture me before I would squeal.”
Carol looked at Reese’s outfit. “You now have two sets of Jennifer’s cl
othes over here.”
“She has more than that on.” The words were barely out of Jennifer’s mouth before Reese’s hand came back and swatted her again. “I think I’m just going to enjoy this food and keep my mouth shut before I end up black and blue.”
“Good idea,” Reese said, eyeing her carefully.
“It’s so good to see my two girls being playful with each other again.” Carol smiled and shook her head. “All kidding aside, I’m very happy for you both.”
“Thanks, Mom,” Reese said, taking Jennifer’s hand. “We’re both happy, too.”
When they finished their lunch, Jennifer picked up her plate and cup and placed them in the dishwasher. Reese and Carol did the same.
Carol looked at Reese. “Your dad said before he left to play golf, that under no circumstances are you to go to the office this week.”
Reese smiled and kissed her mother’s cheek. “Thanks, Mom, and not just for that or lunch, but for being so understanding. Both you and dad have been great about this.”
“We just want you to be happy, Reese,” Carol said, hugging her daughter and smiling at Jennifer.
“Well, I’m going to go to the grocery store. Thank you so much for lunch.” Jennifer hugged Carol, too.
“You are welcome here anytime, Jennifer.”
“Would you like some company?” Reese asked Jennifer.
“Of course, I would.”
Carol watched as they both got into Jennifer’s car. Her smile was wide, and she was so happy to see the life come back to her daughter’s eyes. It didn’t bother her that Reese was in love with a woman. She was just so happy that it was someone who she knew would treat her the way she deserved to be treated. It was just the thought of Reese moving to Chicago that stayed in the back her mind.
Reese was quiet as they drove to the store. Jennifer glanced over at her and saw she was staring out the window. “I didn’t mean to tease you, Reese. I’m sorry.”
Reese turned from the window and looked at her with a smile. “I don’t care about that.”
“Then what is it?” Jennifer asked, showing the worry on her face.
“I’m afraid I’m going to wake up and this will all be a dream.”
Jennifer reached for her hand and squeezed. “It’s not a dream, sweetheart, because if it’s a dream, we’re both having the same one.”
CHAPTER FIFTEEN
When they returned to the house with the groceries, they began putting everything away.
“I’m glad you suggested the fried chicken so we don’t have to take the time to cook dinner,” Reese said with a twinkle in her eye.
“What would you like to do now?” Jennifer asked, taking Reese into her arms.
Reese pulled away. “You are going to do some writing,” she insisted.
“Writing?” Jennifer asked, pulling away from Reese. “Why would I want to do that?”
“Because I don’t want to be the one that takes you away from your work.” Reese patted her arm. “Do this for me, please.”
“How long do I have to write?” Jennifer asked, pouting.
“You write for two hours and I’m going to go next door and pack a bag for the week.”
Jennifer kissed her lips. “I like the sound of that.”
“Then when I come back we can decide what we want to do.” Her grin made Jennifer smile. “Okay?”
“I guess I can live with that,” Jennifer said, pretending she was upset. “Before you leave…” Jennifer began, but Reese pulled her in for a deep kiss. She backed up into the kitchen counter to keep herself from falling. “If you keep that up, I won’t let you leave.”
“I just wanted to make sure you would think about me while I was gone.” Her shy smile came back.
“There is no doubt I will be thinking about you. Now I’m not sure I’ll get any work done.”
Reese pulled out of her arms. “I’ll see you in two hours.”
“If you get bored, come back sooner,” Jennifer called out.
Reese walked into her parent’s house, and seeing the kitchen was empty, she walked toward the living room.
“Hi, Mom,” Reese said, walking into the room.
“Reese, I didn’t think I would see you again today,” Carol said, placing her book down and taking off her glasses. “Is everything okay?” she asked, concerned.
“Everything is fine, Mom. I asked Jennifer to write for a couple of hours.” Reese took a seat on the couch. “I don’t want her to end up resenting me because I’m keeping her from writing.”
“I don’t believe she would resent you,” Carol asserted.
“I know the stories about Jennifer forgetting dinners and dates because she was working. I don’t want her to give up her career because I’m back in her life.” Reese sighed. “Do you think I’m being paranoid?”
“What about your work, Reese?” Carol asked softly. “Will you have to give up your career and life here to be with Jennifer?” She knew it might be too soon for her to be asking these questions of Reese, but she wanted her to think of herself this time. Carol didn’t want anyone including Jennifer to decide what was best for Reese. Steven chose his residency in Texas and Reese just followed along not questioning his decision.
“I, we haven’t discussed the future, Mom. It’s too soon to even discuss our plans. I love Jennifer and she loves me, but we have to see where this goes. We have to see if love is enough to carry us through to a real and lasting relationship.” Reese wanted nothing more than to be in Jennifer’s life forever, but she wasn’t naïve enough to believe that problems won’t occur. No one would have believed that their relationship would not have survived in the past. All she could do was work on their relationship now, and hope that they could make their love work finally.
“So what are you going to do for the next couple of hours?” Carol asked.
“Well, I’m going to pack a bag for a few days.” She watched as Carol smiled. “You did that already, didn’t you?” Carol nodded with a laugh. “I thought I would take a nap while I waited.”
“That’s a good idea.” Carol smiled. “I’m sure you didn’t get much sleep last night.”
Reese opened her mouth and decided it was best not to challenge her mother. “Can you wake me by four o’clock in case I fall asleep?”
“Of course, honey. Go relax, I’ll wake you.”
At four o’clock, Carol woke her daughter. She touched Reese’s arm softly. “Reese, it’s four o’clock.”
Reese turned on the bed. “Thanks, Mom.”
Carol picked up the papers from the bed. “What’s this?”
“Jen printed a few chapters of her next book for me to read.” Reese pointed. “It’s hilarious. I don’t think she would mind if you want to read it.” Reese got off the bed and ran her hand through her hair. “I better go.”
They walked down the steps together. “Have a good time, Reese,” Carol said as Reese walked toward the back door.
“I’ll see you tomorrow, Mom.”
Reese walked into the house next door and locked the door behind her. She was about to call out to Jennifer and realized if she was engrossed in her writing, she would never hear her. Reese found the den empty when she came up the steps and walked toward the bedroom. Jennifer lay on the bed facing away from her. So Reese did the only thing that came to her mind, she took her clothes off and crawled into bed. Her naked body pressed up against Jennifer and she fell asleep.
Jennifer opened her eyes and saw a hand across her stomach. Her movement made the body behind her shift and roll away from her. She immediately felt the loss and turned over. Her smile was wide as she looked at Reese’s nude body asleep on the bed with her. Jennifer’s lips were drawn to her shoulder and she dropped light kisses down her arm and across her body.
Reese opened her eyes. “Hi,” she said, touching the back of Jennifer’s head.
“Hi, yourself,” Jennifer said, sitting up and looking into her eyes. “When did you get here?”
“Four o’clock
as planned.” Reese stretched. “You were sound asleep and I decided you needed company.”
“Oh, I did, did I?” Jennifer planted a light kiss on Reese’s lips. “And your clothes didn’t want to join you?” she asked, teasing.
“No,” she said with a smile, as she reached for the hem of Jennifer’s t-shirt. “I find these clothes very offensive to my naked body.”
“Oh, you do huh?” Jennifer’s smile met a matching one. “Well, I’ll just have to do something about that.” Her clothes came off in a flash and she lay across Reese’s chest. “Is that better now?”
“So much better,” Reese moaned as she took possession of Jennifer’s lips.
An hour later Reese rested in the crook of Jennifer’s arm. “I’m starving,” she said as Jennifer’s stomach growled. “So are you. Why don’t you give me a minute to take a shower and then I’ll make us a salad to go with the fried chicken.”
Jennifer reached for Reese’s mouth before she could leave the bed. “We could take a shower together and then go make a salad together?”
Reese jumped off the bed. “Then we will never get to eat,” she said with a laugh. “You stay here.”
“You’re no fun.” Jennifer stretched as she watched Reese go into the bathroom. She closed her eyes with a smile on her face. The ringing of her cell phone erased the thoughts of her and Reese making love. “Hi Joyce,” she said into the phone.
“What are you doing?” Joyce asked.
“Nothing at the moment.” Jennifer waited for Joyce to get to the point.
“How’s it going with Reese?” she asked.
Reese chose that moment to come out of the bathroom. She had the towel on her head and didn’t notice Jennifer was on the phone. “Okay, your turn for a shower,” she said, then removed the towel from her head. “Sorry, I didn’t know you were on the phone.”
“Is Reese there?” Joyce asked.
