Lin stopped and held Merryl more firmly.

“Wray,” he said, taking a deep breath. “You and I are both mutants.”

“Mutants!” Wray suddenly opened his pale eyes wide then, all in an instant, broke into a gale of laughter.

“Lin! You're a mutant!” Merryl tried to say more then she was lost in the roars of laughter from Wray.

“That explains many things; darling,” Lin said, comfortably. “I'm really better than a First, good enough for you to marry, anyway. The Cybernetic Controller will have to be brought up to date. It must learn to cater for mental mutants, grade them correctly, and not just throw away physical mutants.”

“Oh, Lin!” Merryl’s eyes were shining.

“And one day,” he prophesied, “We, or our children, will blast off in a new spaceship, heading for the promise of the stars.”
